Intel D 805

Has anyone got the above setup? I have read about clocking it to silly speeds etc, I was just wondering what it would compare to in the real world.

Currently, I do a little bit of video editing and mainly gamin/browsing, so is this the right setup for me or should I go down the Athlon A64 route as the prices are coming down a lot.

I fully intend overclocking it, thats why I've got some watercooling on order

Im just in the final decision making process before hitting the "order" button and was wondering how this setup (overclocked to 4.1ghz) would compare to the dual core AMDs

Depends what setup you've got at the moment really?

You'll probably need a new mobo and RAM if you haven't got a fairly recent board that uses DDR2, although there are some SIS chipsets that use DDR RAM, but they're not very fast.

If you've got a Socket 939 board, then I'd say go with an AMD?

It's a good video encoding chip, and for the cash it's pretty good at all the other stuff too. AMD 64 chips would be faster for gaming, but it's a bit of an overstated myth to be honest and you're unlikely to see that much of an increase, dependent on the game.

Do a search on here, as theres been lots of discussion around overclocking, but it depends on the mobo mainly. I can only get a reliable 3.2Ghz on mine, though others are well on the way to 4Ghz!!

You could do a lot worse for the money, but as I say above, it depends on where you're starting from.

Its all going to be new stuff. Im thinking Asus P5WD2-E pre,iu, or Gigabyte G1975X Turbo. I've been told to get a board with 8 phase power supply so the above are my first choices.

I've seen people reporting good overclocks on here with the Asus board, I was going to pick one up myself, but I'm content for now and will probably see how that Conroe chip pans out... (have you heard about it, it's meant to be rather good!! )

Seriously though, having run a D805 for a few months, it's just got on and done everything I've asked of it. I do a lot of encoding of TV card recordings onto DVD to watch in the living room, and it's pretty quick at that.

I also play COD2/HL2/TOCA3, and it seems able to keep my 7800GT pretty well fed with instructions!

There are AMD chips that would do things quicker, but not THAT much, and then you have to factor in the price of the thing.

Although, you ought to check out the D 930 chip too, which I think is pretty good value at the moment and should run a bit cooler being based on the 65nm process. Folks are reporting decent overclocks with that too.

Is the D930 slower than the Conroe E6300? Or am I better off waiting for them to come into stock?

I'd be interested in knowing that too!

A 930/940 series was going to be my next upgrade, as my current board supports it, but the E6300 might be a better bet, especially if it clocks ok and a board can be picked up for a fair price.

I'd hang on if you can, as within a few weeks, things should be a bit clearer.

I think im going to wait a week or so, get the 930 chip if/when the price comes down, wait for the results of overclocking the Conroe and upgrade next year. What do you rekon?
