I'm looking to build a new PC but now I'm really confused as to which CPU to go for. The Intel 940 is faster and also cheaper than the 4400 on paper but I cant find any side by side comparisons of them.

What would you guys reccomend? Its for a video editing rig with maybe the odd game and plenty of office/net stuff.

Thanks

AMD CPUs work differently to those by Intel and you can't just use the clock speed as a measure of how they compare. Basically AMD CPUs do more per clock cycle than Intel CPUs. So a 2.2GHz AMD may in fact be faster than the Intel D 940 3.2GHz.

However, I haven't seen any side by side benchmarks to say either way which is the better CPU.

Conventional wisdom suggests that Intel is better than AMD for video editing though I'm not sure about those particular chips.

What motherboard would you get? Do you want to be able to upgrade to Conroe-based chips in the future if you go Intel?

The 940 will be the better option in this case due to intel being better at that tasks you will do.

But if it was me I would just wait for conroe its only weeks away!

I'd also wait until July 23rd (I think) for the prices of the 940 to drop. Apparently, due to the release of the conroe they are going to drop down by a lot, so wait a month or so can you can save yourself quite a bit of £££ I think.

Besides the obvious performance advantages of the AMD chip the main thing to consider with the intels is that what you save on the chip you more than pay for with overpriced mobo's and ram!

I'm going to buck the trend and say the X2 4400+

The P-D CPU isn't all that great as dual core CPUs go. The 800 series wasn't much good - the 900 is a definite improvement

The P-D 940s direct rival would be the X2 3800+. The 4400+ is effectively two 3700+ CPUs

The clock speed of the P-D is faster on paper but that's about it. The X2 is the superior CPU, even in the traditional Intel strongholds of video editing and encoding

Better yet would be to wait until Conroe at the end of next month if you can as it will beat both

my opty is fast

but my mates 940 is faster in rendering in premier

fact with a small overclock in video work the 940 is faster

but not enough for me to get one
