ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe. Cost £95, but it has onboard Dolby Digital Live sound card.

@ 4 ghz would you say this is better than a 3700+ san diego which is overclocked?, i'm seriously considering building one of these rather than a san diego based AMD system.

For purely single threaded applications a 3700+ San Diego @ 2.4GHz will perform like a 4GHz P4. The P4 will be quicker in encoding, the San Diego in games but there's not a huge amount in it

If you're running multi-threaded applications or serious multitasking then the P-D will be quicker purely because it's a dual core CPU

Just so I know what I'd be getting into with overclocking an intel setup, how fast must the DDR2 be capable of to get into the high figures? Am I right in thinking the DDR2 will just run 1:1, and 4Ghz 800FSB wouldn't be a problem with cheap DDR2 400?

no, you can run ddr2 out of sync, eg 4:5

eg 250 fsb / 320 mem etc..

suppose it depends on the boards really.

ah so not like the older Socket 478's where you need to run 1:1 otherwise you get a performance loss? So I could get away with say some cheaper DDR2-400 or DDR2-533?

DDR2 533 would be fine and is the norm now, unlikely you will be going to 266fsb anyway so 1:1 wont be a problem

It appears as though the Asus P5P800-SE takes Dual Core CPU's like the Pentium D 805. Since this takes AGP cards and standard DDR, this could be an excellent board to bring to ocuk. As far as I can tell you've got a nice range of well priced DDR and DDR2, which is great.

Abit LG-81 Intel 945G Micro ATX (Socket 775) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-084-AB)

Could do with having that at £70

Most places seem to be charging £71 for it and a decent mATX board would be nice. Also your corsair value DDR2 seems to be about £10-£15 more than elsewhere...

the board is good, but the 920 im using does stress this board, not sure how the 805 will fair, also vcore goes upto 1.485v max.

infact the asus one should work a charm

has pci-express lock problems above 220 fsb, but its not as if your going to that high. (with some tweaks it should be good upto 240ish)

whats the cheapest board that these will work with? and whats the cheapest board they'll work with that have overclocking options ?
they can be from any site, dont limit it to the ones sold here.
onboard gfx and ddr 1 would be ok also.

£82 though I dont wanna spend any more than £70 on a board

Found the Gigabyte GA-8I945GMF which looks pretty good, that is £75~ froma few places (another suggestion OCuk) but there seems to be very little info about it.
