I am thinking of buying a new pc and when i get to the customise section it will let me upgrade from a Intel® Pentium® D 930 Dual Core Processor (3.00GHz, 800MHz fsb, 2x2MB cache) to a Intel® Pentium® D 940 Dual Core Processor (3.20GHz, 800MHz fsb, 2x2MB cache) or Intel® Viiv™ technology -Intel® Pentium® D 940 Dual Core(3.20GHz,800MHz,2x2MB) for an extra £188 sooooo the question is is it worth the extra cost ?

an extra 200mhz? well 400 as it dual for 188 quid, not not worth it, get the 3.0 and overclock to 3.2 for free maybe even get some more out of it

i know amd X2 is faster but almost double the score (well 5500 more :P), jeeez thats impressive, is that the cpu score or actual 3dmark score ?

yeah i cant see where that's comming from. '05 is 95% gpu bound, so the intel rig, no matter what the cpu, should be with 1500point at the most of the x2 rig.

The difference between my opteron @ 2.2ghz (stock) and 2.9ghz is 197 points. hardly massive and i can tell you right now, 2xgtx's dont score 7,700 when im scoring 6,652 with an x800gto2;)

Note his quote for the AMD rig has 2 7800's and the intel rig has one, a tad misleading if you ask me, its 3dm05 course and SLI rig is gonna beat a single card rig by a good margin.

Looks like the good old fanboyism to make AMD sound a lot better :p

Any chance the OP could wait untill Yonah which should be out soon, has awesome potential :D

nar they both say 2x 7800 dont they ?

just one says 2x7800 and the other says 2x 7800,

i guess something was wrong with is intel rig ?

The score are right, but I started with the Intel a while ago & nvidia drivers have improved.
Games went awfull on the Intel; had to play COD2 in DX7 mode.
I must admit that the Intel felt quicker in Windows at 3.3.
The Intel CPU was 235 but the AMD was 375 too.

to compare game performance:
Intel dualcore 3 @ 3.3, 2x 7800gtx, 3dmk5 = 7700
AMD dualcore 2.2 @ 2.75, 2x7800gtx, 3dmk5 = 13400

but the AMD is more expensive

I Dont think any of the dualcores (9x series) have not clocked to almost 4 on Stock volts, let alone with a voltage bump.

Average clocks are 4.2 + on air, 300fsb +

Whereas most dualcore amd;s top out at around 2.75 (x2's)

So the comparison isn't really accurate.

It's also known intel's sli isn't as good.

920 3dmark01 run, x800 pro, 32k. Sentential's rig.

Hmm some people seem not to be aware that Intel's new Pressler chip is on 65nm and has a 2meg cache and clocks as well as an Opteron but cost much less. The position now is not as clear as it used to be a month ago.

A few friends in the States have 920 2.8Ghz and all have got to 4+Ghz on stock voltage on air, 4.1/4.2 with a slight voltage increase and one has 4.4Ghz on H20. At these speeds the Intel is a good buy at £182 for 920 compared to £217 for an X2 3800.

The full review can be found at Xbitlabs.

I'm glad someone here has finally realised that intel have some good offerings, the 920 is an oustanding chip i think, pair it with the asus 955/975 board and you're away - Also ddr2 is starting to get better and better. People are getting 8k orso in sandra.
