Intel E5200 vs AMD e5050

On the other hand the AMD will give you future upgrade potential as LGA775 will soon be end of life. They are both similarly priced but i reckon the Intel will be a bit faster and will definately clock better. If it's just for a general purpose/internet pc then the little extra performance of the Intel won't matter so much.

Intel E5200 vs AMD e5050

I'm thinking the 2MB 45nm Wolfdale is a good choice for a HTPC or computer that is left running almost 24/7. If you have a motherboard with voltage options you can undervolt the E5200 quite a bit when running at stock speeds!

I'm not sure how well the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e (65nm) can do in the undervolting department? . . . they weren't too capable back in the socket 939 days and I think maybe this has to do with the onboard memory controller

Thanks guys. I am also buliding a general use PC, which I am gambling on a AMD chip with (always used Intel in the past). So, I think the Intel might be a safer option for this HTPC. Its being paired with a Asus P5N7A-VM, by the way.

I've just finished putting together a htpc style computer based onthe 7750be. Quite pleased so far, went with amd purely because my last two computers were intel and it seems a shame not to give the other side a try.

Stock heatsink is stupidly loud at the moment, and the bios looks incredibly alien. Otherwise all is nice.

AMD Athlon II X2 is coming 2nd of June...sure you can't wait? 3Ghz, 2MB L2 Cache, 65W on 45nm. It's AM3 only, but you can get cheap DDR3 RAM and Motherboards:

Same old story though, wait for this, then something else will be on the horizon. Plus the extra costs will push it all over. Thanks for the input though.
