Both are priced about the same. I have always gone down the AMD path in the past. So I understand their XP ratings. However, I haven't got a clue about the Intel Ratings.

Given a choice (no overclocking) which of those two should I go for? I currently have a 939 mobo and old DDR ram so I am basically starting from scratch.

Also, can anyone explain how the Intel ratings work. So I have least a vague idea. Thanks?

With both at stock the E6320 will have a slightly better performance IMO.

E2140 - 1.6Ghz 1Mb L2 800FSB
E2160 - 1.8Ghz 1Mb L2 800FSB
E4300 - 1.8Ghz 2Mb L2 800FSB
E4400 - 2Ghz 2Mb L2 800FSB

E6300 - 1.83Ghz 2Mb L2 1066FSB
E6320 - 1.83Ghz 4Mb L2 1066FSB
E6400 - 2.13Mhz 2Mb L2 1066FSB
E6420 - 2.13Ghz 4Mb L2 1066FSB
E6600 - 2.4Ghz 4Mb L2 1066FSB
E6650 - 2.33Ghz 4Mb L2 1333FSB
E6700 - 2.66Ghz 4Mb L2 1066FSB
E6750 - 2.66Ghz 4Mb L2 1333FSB
E6850 - 3Ghz 4Mb L2 1333FSB
X6800 - 2.93Ghz 4Mb L2 1066FSB

Q6600 - 2.4Ghz 8Mb L2 1066FSB Quad-core
QX6700 - 2.66Ghz 8Mb L2 1066FSB Quad-core
QX6800 - 2.93Ghz 8Mb L2 1066FSB Quad-core

The 4400+ us roughly equivalent to the 6300 so the 5000+ should be quicker than the 6320. Not 100% sure but i would say so.

Someone can probably give you a definitive answer otherwise take a look at some reviews.

Dont forget the extra 2mb of cache will help with the 6320 over the 6300 at stock speeds too.

I would go for the C2D!

I think I will. I understand the C2D run cooler and use less power then the equivalent AMD, meaning it would be easier to make the Intel quieter than the AMD.

I think I will give the C2D a try.

Still not the wiser on how their numbers measure up to AMD though. No matter, heard a lot of good things about C2D.

Plus when you clock the C2D you will see massive gains! :D

Just found some benchmarks against the X2 5000+, X2 4800, X2 4600 such as E4400, E4300, E6420 etc.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core2duo-e6420_6.html

Seems a little like a mixed bag in my opinion. Sure Photoshop is faster using the C2D, but then it seems AMD is better at Premiere.

I think I may end up sticking with AMD after all. Probably a little due to loyalty, and a little due to the familiarity, and a lot to do with the fact the C2D really doesn't sweep the board pound for pound against the AMD equivalent like all the hype I had been hearing.

Perhaps I should hold out until end of July... Would it be fair to expect price cuts in intels E6600's...

lol i have the 4400 and its crap

I have the 4600 and im happy with it. Its only as good as what you use it for.

Whats the point of having all the expensive stuff to run benchmarks all day when a lower end CPU will do the microsft word document your lass is doing or playing internet games with the kids???

Eather way they are both decent CPU's and great value for the money at the moment.

if your overclocking the c2d will go a good amount further, i would say that the intel would wipe the floor £/performance if you went with a 2160/2140 chip
