Hi,
I have a fairly old system running an Intel E6600 processor. It runs Call of Duty at a reasonable setting, and although the graphics card could really do with updating it will have to wait for the moment.
Would it be worth looking at a quad core processor to tide me over for a year to 18 months by that time I might be in the market for an overall upgrade.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Do you know the motherboard your running - also is this the original Core 2 duo E6600 as I think Intel relaunched the name later.

Looking at the specs the board can take the Q9xxx range of cpu's - which will give you a speed boost but check your BIOS revision first as you might need to update.

Finding one you need to look at the 2nd hand markets.

BIOS update if needed and sticking a Q9550 in there if supported (and you can source one reasonably cheap) would be a fair upgrade. Though unless your gaming or using apps that are multi-thread capable a lot it might not be so apparent - I'm still using an equivalent(ish) CPU for most of my general desktop stuff and its never feels slow compared to my i7s unless I try to do something like encode a video.

Q9550 and that board will be a very nice combo, the P5Q series were one of the best for clocking intel quad chips on. Had 3.8ghz from both a Q6600 and a Q9550 in the P5Q deluxe board.
