i have

CPU: AMD Phenom II 1100T X6 4.0GHz
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair V Formula

i am looking to (possibly) replace with:

2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i5 2500K 3.30GHz Socket LGA1155 - Retail.
ASRock Z77 Extreme4 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) Motherboard

good choice?

it's taken me a while of looking around and comparing hardware, and i came up with this as being my personal best choice, just wanted to clarify with you guys too.

also i am thinking it's suppose it's not really a big enough of an upgrade to be spending 300 quid on really ...or is it?

Is this for gaming? A Phenom at 4Ghz shouldn't be holding you back unless you've got some serious graphics power!

Also Ivybridge is out soon, which is probably worth waiting for [as what you've got isnt exactly slow!] :)

yeah, thats why i was kinda thinking it might not be worth spending the money on, i use a asus matrix platinum gtx 580 at 900mhz with my current setup / yeah its for gaming. i dont bench i just like to overclilock and use it 24/7 at that speed, mainly for gaming

Well you seem to have overclocked that one reasonably well, maybe better your cooling instead and push your current CPU further if you wanted to upgrade something?

Considering your uses and your current hardware I wouldn't suggest you spend any money on a CPU/mobo upgrade yet - as in the vast majority of circumstances your GTX 580 graphics card will be limiting your performance in games, not your 4GHz Phenom II Hex core CPU.

If you really want to spend £300 - then these days that will nab you a brand-new GTX 580 with a custom cooler. Running a second GTX 580 in SLI would give you a nice performance boost in games - so long as your PSU can support it. Also, if you don't have one already, an SSD is an excellent upgrade for a PC.
