Would I be better off getting an i3-6100 with the possibility of upgrading at a later date or going for a used Sandy/Ivy i5 but not being able to upgrade later. Cost wise they seem fairly similar new vs used with motherboard etc?

Anyone used the i3 for gaming, it looks to be very capable from benchmarks I've seen online but wondering if anyone has any real world experience with it

I have an i3-6100 system and its been great for gaming hooked up to a 1060. I've been thoroughly impressed for the price. There are a small handful of games where proper 4 core CPUs are better and I would imagine this will increase in the future.

Comparing to used parts is a tough one though, you will always pay a premium for the new stuff. The upgrade path is there though if you need it later down the line.

I'd personally go with the i3 on the newer chipset. If you get a capable motherboard, you can still over clock it to make up for some performance deficit over the 1155 quads, also, consider memory speed with the i3, as the faster kits do make a reasonable difference to frame rates, particularly the minimums.

Digital foundry have a done quite a few videos featuring the 6100, have a gander on YouTube.

i think that most cpus can be used for gaming, i've not had issue with pentiums, amd a series, FX's and i5's and i3's. the 6100 is a capable cpu and you can easily upgrade it to a better chip later on.

From looks of it I would seriously hold out for Bristol Ridge and AM4.

Could I ask what sort of games you've used it with? Are you able to run things at high/ultra generally or have you had to dial back settings somewhat?

Yeah, I've seen bits and pieces regarding both platforms but it always seems there's something just on the horizon that would be good to wait on so tempted to just go for it.

There's always something on the horizon that might be worth waiting for... :)

As far as games, maxed out at 1080p BF4 runs great around 80-90fps, Overwatch 120-130fps.

I think you will regret not waiting a couple of months.

Yeah possibly, though if I wait I may then regret not waiting for Summit Ridge, or for the next Intel iteration or so on.

To be fair as long as what I buy performs well day to day I'm not going to regret it but I get what you mean.
