Seems to be the only one that actually brings something new due to the extra e-cores. What puts me off upgrading from an 12700K for example is the increased power consumption.

I've got one on order but if it wasn't for force of circumstances I'd hold out for a next generation platform instead.

As I've said before I still use quite a bit of older production software which doesn't play nice with AMD's SMT.

Loved the intro. The performance on these is good, especially in production workloads, it's the power consumption that really needs to be addressed.

I have a small form factor case so I do have to be a bit careful with power. 4080 FE is great for this. Going beyond my 12700K will start to show more in the CPU temps.

I'm looking at Intel for an unraid build purely due to the better support for media transcoding using the igpu etc.

Like Rroff says there are circumstances where Intel is still the better option.

I actually thought watching the video it was a little unfair in comparisons, yes its not much better than the 13700K thats a valid point, however, when they compared it in gaming its the x3D chips its mostly bested by and in productivity its the non x3D parts, yes, all AMD, but its not a single AMD chip in both disciplines. Don't get me wrong, if I was buying new today, the 14700K or any Intel part for that matter would not be top of my list, the effiiciency to workload is poor compared to AMD, but I felt the video was a little disingenuous in its conclusion.

At Intel, someone utilized CHATGPT to design the new CPUs. It seems the AI misunderstood the term "Increased Power and Performance" and cranked up the power dial to over 9000. - This sentence was written in chatgpt

It is kind of tricky - the 14700K seems the least compromises CPU currently with a good all-around balance of performance. At 1440p or 4K gaming it sits within single digit percentage of anything else a small number of games aside where the x3D chips pull way ahead, while for productivity uses it mostly sits near the top of the pack aside from a small number of cases where the 7950X pulls way ahead. While being a fair bit cheaper than the 7950 and 14900 chips. For certain tasks it is much faster than the 7800x3D if you use the system for more than gaming.

I'd be tempted to upgrade my 12700k to one of these, but it would likely mean having to buy a new and much more expensive CPU cooler adding an extra £100 ish to the upgrade.

Then, i have to be sure that cooler is compatible moving forward with a new socket as well.

So yeh, the heat is putting me off and making me think it might just be worth waiting another few years and getting a new platform.

I also have a ddr4 board so that might hold it back in some cases (another reason why it's probably best just to wait and get an all new platform at a later date).
