Curious as to how the following two systems would compare?

Intel Core i7-3820 with an Asus Rampage IV GENE X79.

Intel Core i7-4770K with an Asus Maximus VI GENE Z87.

To be honest I am awaiting the Z87 motherboard reviews out at the end of this month, but I am slightly put off by the on board GPU's with Z77 and Z87, I will never use them :(

I am aiming for a MicroATX build with low profile memory in a TJ08B-E case, I already have that case, plus a Seasonic X-650w psu, Samsung Pro SSD, 4tb Hitachi HDD, and an MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III Boost Edition GPU, W7 Ultimate, BluRay drive etc. Just the Mobo, CPU, Ram, Cooler to consider.
I can use full ATX if I have to, but am trying to keep things petite cool n relatively quiet.

I may well buy a second 7950 for Crossfire in future. Not sure, as I am also tempted with the Nvidia 780, I only use a single 24" 120hz BenQ monitor for games, and would like high frame rates.

Main uses are the usual new popular games and a few old. Plus music, movies, photo's. My partner sometimes plays around with a camera, and I used to play with movie servers, TS folders and such. Movies , music and photo will most likely be worked on by this main PC before transfer to a server.

Firstly it really depends on what you are using the PC for, is it gaming? Are you doing any video editing (heavy)?

The 4770k and 3820 are very, very similar.. Performance wise, so really i'd go for the one that cheapest, taking the motherboard and RAM into acoount (2011 really needs quad channel RAM)..

I'd say the 4770k would turn out cheaper.

I like the idea of an XFire build in a TJ08-E..

I use a NH-D14 in my TJ08-E and it's very cool, 65C full load at 4.7Ghz.. and pretty quiet.

Well use will mainly be gaming, Crisis 3, Bioshock, WoT, C&C, Minecraft etc.

I will be working with audio files, mainly WAV and then conversions.

I will be working with HD video content, uncompressed DVD and BluRay files.

Most likely photo's too, RAW and JPG.

I usually have a few browsers open. along side PDF's, games, TS, music etc, the usual various tasks running at once thing.

On top of that, anything my partner wants to do, or anything the kids require including homework, and anything I get interested in, maybe VM.

Cost wise, I don't see much in it, memory costs are pretty close whether its 8GB or 16GB spread between 2 or 4 sticks.

Total difference only works out at around £50 more for the X79 platform.

I had to make the same decision as you and went with the 3820 and RIVG. Haswell would have been cheaper but I liked the fact that X79 will last longer than Z87 and it also has an upgrade path to hex core IB-E.
