Intel i7 4790K temperature question.

Have the temperatures always been this high since you got it or have they gone up recently?

I've only just started monitoring the system to be honest .I've been a laptop user for years and decided to jump up to the big boys toys. The plan is to learn about building PCs and overclocking.Performance wise, its been exactly the same since day one.The PC runs fine, even when gaming, just the temps are high.

Have you looked at what speed/profiles the fans are set to in your BIOS? Maybe they were turned down for the system to be very quiet?

I'd try turning them up to full speed in your bios, just to see if it helps.

Failing that, I'd probably recommend you RMA your system to ocuk - as something clearly isn't right with those temperatures, and the system is so compact that it's hard to work on it yourself without breaking anything, unless you have experience of building these small factor PC's.

Thanks , will try that in a moment.I'm a laptop user so my skill set is limited to swapping a hdd and upgrading ram on a lappy ;) I wouldn't have a clue on maintenance or upgrades on my new rig.

ci_newman and Dave2150 mentioned turning off Multi core enhancement but for the life of me, I cant find it in the BIOS. I guess Gigabyte call it something else ?

I spoke to customer service this morning . They basically told me that the 4790K runs hot and I should be fine and not to worry and if I start getting shutdowns/blue screens I should get back in contact with them. Also keep it well ventilated and possibly add more case fans. It wasn't the conversation I was hoping to hear. Not really sure what to make of that phone call.:o

They do run hot, but it shouldn't run 47C idle with a cooler as big as the Megahalems.

Can you use HWinfo64 to monitor and Stress test using Asus realbench to see what speed the CPU runs flat out? It should reach at least 4.2 on the turbo fairly consistently. If it throttles it should be indicated and clock speed will be a bit lower.

The profiles were set to normal on all fans. Altered them all to full speed and have a decrease in temps when idle.

Downloading it now and will post the results.

Oh by the way , thanks for helping me out guys ;)

Ok, I was just wondering if maybe something had got clogged up in a fan or something and had caused an increase.

As others have said the 4790K do run hot but mine runs significantly cooler than that with a slightly inferior cooler (Corsair H75) when overclocked to 4.6Ghz. In a small case airflow will normally be the biggest problem so it's worth a quick check that nothing (dust, fluff etc) has blocked any fans vents. Can you feel air being sucked in and blown out of the case from the fans?

What environment do you have the PC in? Is it fairly open or boxed into a cabinet or anything like that that may be restricting airflow?

Another thing it could be is if the heatsink hasn't been seated properly onto the cpu but to test that will involve removing it and refitting so that's probably not an option for you at the moment.

Temperatures are definitely suspect. Is the cooler mount good? (No wobble/loose screws)

Judging from the voltages in the BIOS and in the screenshots it shouldn't be anywhere near that temperature.

Do the cooler fins or heatpipe tops get warm during usage?

I've got a cat, so I hoover and dust my flat every day.I also check the fans/intakes for cat hair and make sure everything is tip top and in order. The fan blades do have some dust on them, I will get around to buying some compressed air eventually.

The case is next to my to main TV and is placed sideways next to it.The side of the PC is parallel to the wall and has tons of air flowing in from the kitchen ( I leave the window open when I'm at home as I like fresh air) and the room temp is around 20°

Is the mount good ? How do I tell ...yeah bit of noob lol. I can move the cooler slightly side to side from left to right, kinda pivots on it axis. It's cold to touch and appears to be clean.

Just did a stress test and will post the outcome in my next post.

So I just ran the stress test and benchmark. Heres some screens.

I also logged it as well , Heres the HiWinFo .CSV file.

Hopefully I captured the right stuff. It was a 15 min stress test.If I've buggered it up , let me know and I will run it again.

EDIT : just realised that I'm using the 32bit version and not the 64bit version. Will it matter ?

Send that Log file to OCUK support, and tell them this is not acceptable for a system they build for you.

The chip hits Thermal protection 5 seconds in, and downclocks to somewhere between 3000 and 3300Mhz.

The only weird thing I see is the iGPU appears enabled (Which is useless, considering your 970 GTX) and CPU Package power at modest clock (3300) and voltage (0.96v) under Throttle is higher than mine under Prime95 at 4400/1.27v

Idle power use at 5.3w seems appropriate for a chip that is not under volted.

I do like your DRAM power. I run 16GB at 2400mhz/1.6V and it uses 10W idle, yours just 2.5

I didn't understand a word of that Ronald, but thankfully you do ;) I'm going to email them now and see what they say.

Thank you so much for your help, same as everyone else who has helped me out in this thread. Is there a rep system in place on the forum ? You all deserve some.

I will post back with the outcome of this. Thanks guys ( maybe girls , who knows ?)

hmmmm

Everything does appear normal,£1 says it ends up being the tech who built it forgot to put thermal paste on the cpu :P

Not impossible, which should have shown in a system test...

Things go wrong, it is how they get resolved that I like to judge on.

I fully agree. Send it back to them, the 4790k should be running quite cool with the heatsink you have installed, especially at stock voltage/speed.

With your 20dc ambient, it should idle between 30-35dc, and shouldn't exceed 60-75dc in games.

Yup sounds like airflow isn't the issue then. That mounting sounds a bit suspect though. It's been a while since I used any large air coolers but in my experience when fitted they should be clamped on pretty tight and shouldn't really have any play in them. When you say it's cool to the touch do you mean the actual metal fins on the heatsink? If so then that definitely doesn't sound right, when under load it should be getting pretty damn hot!

Basically it shows that your chip reaches its maximum safe temperature within a few seconds and then has to slow itself down to stop it burning itself out. Definitely not how it should be running with that cooler when not overclocked.

Good news, sent an email to customer support and this morning they replied and agreed that something was up with my PC.

Went through some basic troubleshooting and taking pictures of the CPU cooler and fan once the hard drive enclosure was removed. We checked ( as best I could ) that everything was installed correctly.

They have arranged for it to be picked up on Thursday and will sort out the issue and send it back to me once working.

I'm really impressed with customer service. Very polite and very professional.

Thanks again everyone :) No doubt you will see me posting questions on the forums again.

Thanks nails ;)

Thanks for explaining to me about the thermal protection as well. I've got sooo much to learn.

Its a huge jump from laptop to desktop.Sure, the OS is the same, internets still the same.Software is the same but when it comes to hardware and technical stuff, its like a massive learning curve.

Less time looking a lolcats and more time reading up on tech related stuff :D

No problem, this is a pretty good place to get advice (as long as you steer clear of asking whether to get an NVidia or AMD card in the GPU forums ;)) and you'll soon find that it really isn't as complicated as it first looks and you'll be tweaking and upgrading your pc before you know it :)

I got an email today with the verdict. PC being sent back to me repaired. :)

Here is the technicians Test Report:

(SYSTEM REPAIR: Cooler failed, Component Failure, Cooler not making good contact and causing overheating. Cooler replaced and system re-built, now works and tests hitting around 80c at maximum.)
