Intel i7 4790K? Upgrade time

Hi folks,

I've been out of the computer loop for a while and I can't seem to catch up, but i'm after some advice on upgrading my desktop, as i'm waiting for Mafia 3 and Battlefield 1 to come out!

My current specs are ok however my processor and mobo really need upgrading as they're about 6 years old and don't meet the minimum requirements for Mafia 3 (funnily enough ran Battlefield 1 Beta great)

My current setup:
Intel Core i5 750, socket LGA1156
Asus P7P55D Motherboard
Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler
Nvidia GTX 970
Corsair 1600Mhz DDR3 8GB RAM
SSD
Corasir 850W power supply etc

I was looking at the Intel i7 6700k, however they seem to be more in favour of supporting DDR4 or DDR3L and I feel to get the best out of it you'd need DDR4 and I don't want to buy more RAM at this moment so i'm looking at the Intel i7 4790K coupled with the Asus Z97 - Pro Gamer motherboard

Can anyone advise me if these work well together, if there are any other better options out there?

I'll be able to use my Noctua for the CPU cooler so should be able to keep it cool running a steady overclock.

Any advice, help or comments are greatly appreciated

The only issue I have with that is I'd need a new CPU cooler and I was going to give my old system to my dad as it's a good setup.

I realise the 4790k are sort of dated by a few years but they still seem to be holding their prices and intels new CPU's are getting more and more expensive.

I was practically ready to order the 4790k and Z97 board but now i'm doubting myself again. :(

Also seems that motherboards that support DDR4 are very expensive too. I wasn't wanting to spend anymore than £500 and I don't think you could do a 6700k setup for that

edit: removed link

But is that motherboard any good and is 8GB at 3000Mhz enough?

Ok scratch my previous reply, I've just been sat browsing

seems the intel i7 4790k and Z97 motherboard comes to roughly £450 delivered

now for the i7 6700k with Asus Z170 motherboard, Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz comes to £495

How is there such little price difference

And I can still use my noctua NH-D14 as it's still an 115X socket

Does that seem reasonable? And is the Asus Z170 Pro Gaming motherboard a good enough choice or are there others you'd recommend?

Sorry about the questions, it's a fair chunk of change for me and I want to make sure i'm getting good components that'll work nicely together. I really appreciate your time and thoughts :D

You need to remove the link for the competitors is against the forum rules.

You will be able to resue your cooler on the new motherboard.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £508.47
(includes shipping: £10.50)

Thanks for this MickyFlinn, that's a big help. For an added £50 I think the 6700K is the way to go! :D

You can re use the NH-D14 as the bracket is the same for all LGA 115x series. I'd say to get a 6700k, Z170 Mobo and 16GB 3000mhz RAM you'll be looking at £500 max, well worth the upgrade.

Now i've actually sat and looked at it, it really is a no brainer

6700k with DDR4 for an extra £50 compared to a 4790K and DDR3

I'm so happy I asked you guys before ordering

Many thanks! I'm going to place my order now with the items mickyflinn linked me to. Competitor is £8 cheaper but for peace of mind I'll go with OCUK :D

Yeah I'd seen that, but I don't think i'll notice the difference, people are saying that 2400 DDR4 is quick enough, afterall, I just generally play games :)
