Am i able to overclock my cpu to 3.8ghz and keep my ram speed at 1600mhz?
i have a i7 930
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C9
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R

i have invested in a corsair h50 cooler which is installed already
settings would be nice as i have no idea on what to do in the bois.

many thanks

After 3 years on this forum im sure you know to use the search for one the most common questions asked.
your H50 will handle approx 4ghz while keeping temps in the 80's. Happy reading

You post count and expertise dont effect using the search on here or google. Whats im saying is if you get stuck or have a problem post on here we will help, if you want someone to do the overclock for you go pay ocuk or use the search like we all did :D

Why don't you thugs have a proper read of the OP's question?

He is already at 3.5ghz and needs advice.

So before you come across all wise post some info and help the guy get to 4ghz rather than being lazy and posting a link to another forum.

Do a search and link him in here.

Linking to an external forum for clocking i7 makes you ishoeyi come across as the noob, not the OP

OP post in here mate for some support.

If you want 3.8ghz and your memory at 1600mhz then u will need to use the following.

200 bclk and multi of 19, then change the memory to be shown at 1600mhz and job done, u may need to test again to make sure its stable, may or may not need more vcore.

thank you easyrider for your comments i wasnt sure to post any thing else after the previous comments ...
i just dont know how to get that last extra boost to finish it off it was by luck i got this far.
on my old motherboard i could set the ram and cpu speed seperate but this seems to link to it somehow

Daz what exact settings you wanting, as my previous post states what u need for the speed u want.

Just i can't tell u what vcore is needed as each cpu is different.

The RAM speed is set via the RAM multiplier, and the BCLK, so the CPU and RAM speeds will always be linked. As for seeing if you can keep the as you want, download Nehalem Calc, it's a pretty useful little app for testing settings, and seeing what speeds the different settings give.

iam not sure if 3.8ghz will work yet but will try later today if i wanted to try 4ghz what options do i need.

one thing tho when i use cpuz it shows my speed as 2.5ghz then goes to 3.5ghz when being used
i assume you can disable that if wanted but should i?

many thanks for your help

The speed reduction, boost will be from intel speedstep, and yes this can be turned off if u wanted, or left on also.

3.8 should work just u may need to up the vcore slighlty from what u have it now, maybe a few notches up.

For 4ghz and memory at 1600, you will need bclk of 200 and multi at 20, but u will probably be looking at 1.275 - 1.3v for the vcore.

Gigabyte has produced an Overclocking guide specifically aimed at the i7 920 and their original X58 board, I have used it with my system and even though I haven't gone for an extreme overclock yet, it is very easy to follow.

Just do a Google search for 'Gigabyte i7 Overclocking Guide'.:D

thanks all for the info i have learned a lot with all the info given to me.

be cafefull using the gig i7 guide floating about dazz it is for a C0 chip your using a D0 you wont need those kind of voltages

for for 4ghz start with 1.3vcore and 1.35 qpi voltage if stable you start knocking them down, not the best way but it works. If its not stable note down the BSOD code and we can find out from there
