Intel Laptop Graphics

Intels embedded graphics as a general rule are rubbish when it comes to gaming performance.

I believe there have been reviews done of their gaming performance on different sites.

Try googling for intel GMA 950 gaming performance or similar.

Also iirc the newest versions actually have pixel pipelines (8 in the best models) however they have no vertex units. Performance wise I think you are looking at sub 6200TC performance.

Thanks for the reply, but all I really want to know is whether it'll be any good for playing The Sims or not. I've had nothing to do with PC gaming hardware for three or four years now, so I've no idea how a 6200TC would perform.

OK then, I shall try approaching this from another direction. What graphics should I look out for on the laptop when I am choosing one?

She won't be using it for FPS or anything like that, just The Sims and other games that 10 year old girls play ;)

The reason I asked is that I have this board...

http://www.asrock.com/product/ConRoe945G-DVI.htm

And look! Intel GMA950.

I've got the exact same board, and am using the onboard GMA950.

Games I play (and get good performance):

PES6
Warcraft 3
World of Warcraft (although don't go raiding)
C&C Generals
Quake 3
Freelancer
Starcraft (inc Brood War)

Probably the most demanding is World of Warcraft, which I run 1024x768 with medium settings. It WON'T take 40 man raiding, so don't try. But the frames are well in the thirties when questing.

Just make sure you give it plenty of shared RAM in the BIOS. Or it will get very upset, very quickly.

I posted this in another thread, but it applies here too.

Thanks! That looks great, I am sure Quake 3 must be far more demanding then the games she plays at the moment.

Just tested Sims 2 on it, and it works fine.

Just keep detail settings medium-low and it'll be fine.

Sims tends to be more twitchy about RAM and CPU than graphics anyway.

The intel graphics are poor and as they build into the motherboard on the laptop means there no pci-e slot to upgrade later.

Have a look at this website for info on good laptop graphics cards.
