Intel LGA775 Chipsets. Arg!

I've noticed there's kind of a lot of different chipsets for intel CPUs, from what I gather, the 975 chipset is the latest from Intel, but they seem to be somewhat expensive, usually £150.

Basically what is the best overclocking chipset for LGA775, with conroe support?

The 965 is the newer chipset mate, hence why all the boards are pre order. See the board here above the Badaxe... Intel DP965LT 965 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-011-IN)

Confusing I know.

They are also cheaper, so go figure. Know one seems to know if they will be better or worse for Conroe yet though, but they are built for conroe. :)

Ok, could you expand on that.

I got a P4-3.6HT Pile of junk that I currently have in an Asus P5GD1-FM Board.

TBH I am utterly disappointed at its performance or rather lack of it compared to even my slowest AMD ( Its on par with a Newcastle 3000 @ 2.4 ).

If I was to choose a Motherboard thats both Quick at stock, and has fairly good overclocking potential ( Cos no doubt I will being doing this as some people say I should get over 4Ghz with the 660 Prescott )...

What Board would you suggest?

I am NOT an Intel user by any stretch of the imagination, but I have spent so much on the P4 and got nowhere that I have given it to my 8 year old Daughter, so one last ditch effort might be somethign to dig it out of its grave of playing nothing but MS-Paint and Little mermaid.

Are you serious? the 965 is newer than 975? That just doesn't make sense!
Anyway if that is the case then I dont mind because they are cheaper than the 975 chipsets anyway!

However, I read that the badaxe mobo uses the 975 chipset but can support crossfire? is that even possible? I thought to be able to use SLI or crossfire you have to have a specialised chipset from either company?

975 chipset has been in circulation for at least 3 months, if not longer.
965 chipset still not yet readily available.
Believe it.

The new Intel chipsets are built for multi-GPU setups. ATi Crossfire is supported out-of-the-box and nVidia SLi can work too. SLi is only restricted because nVidia hasn't released any drivers for it. There are some who've hacked drivers and run SLi on Intel boards.

There really isnt much choice at the mo for boards, as theres only a hand full availible until the newer 965 based boards come out. The popular choice is the Intel Extreme D975bx-304 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2. I'll not reccomend the Asus board to you as you seem to be having a bad time with them. ;)

Not wrong there.

I have decided to get rid of the P4 for once and for all... Unless I see the conroe in the flesh and I am impressed a lot, I will not be bothering at all with Intel, compared to what I get from my AMDs, I am just simply not impressed in the slightest by their naff poor performance... I mean, Benches were good, sometimes very good, but real-world use, they were sluggish and quite honestly I was utterly dissappointed by mine. Yes, its probably down to the Mobo, but there is no excuse there for performance that bad, no matter how poor the Mobo.

I have just upgraded what I have a notch, cos I am already happy with what I have, and this means that the bigger jumps next time will be a more worthy option... With everyone seemingly jumping on the conroe bandwagon at this time, I will wait till next week for the kentsfield ( lol )

A quality motherboard helps......

If you buy a cheap as chips motherboard, its gonna suck ass compared to a quality mobo.

LOL, well, there is a turn up for the books!

I got rid of the P4 the other week, and a couple of days ago, it came back.

I have instead swapped it for a Sempron 2800 PC and they are utterly chuffed with their new one!

Ok, so it does feel a hell of a lot zippier than that P4 Junk, so I am now getting a new Mobo for it.

I have posted a question regarding this elsewhere and it seems NF4 are not for Intels, so I am getting the Gigabyte / Intel job... Forget the model, but I ordered it earlier on todayalong with a "Hopefully" ok GFX Card... An X1600 sound fast, but price says its a dog, but at least it should be good enough to use anyway.

I think that as this is now the 3rd time I have sold it off and the third time that its come back and got swapped for a Sempron system, that can only say that it really is that bad, and it realyl does need a new Mobo, so... Here goes.
