Is a good move from Intel. Not only do they get to sell products with the very best manufacturing processess but they also limit their direct rivals having access to them at the same time.
If they are going to use those wafers for their gpus then they must think they will be semi competitive . Lets hope they are and we have a 3 way fight in the gpu market.

Well, since the have potentially deep pockets, it may be that they know their GPUs will only just barely competitive and they're trying to get exclusive on a better node to make them even semi competitive.
Against Athlon, Intel's Pentium 4 was just barely competitive but since they had the better node and manufacturing they were able to sell it as semi competitive. That plus dirty tricks worked back then and for over a decade they had no competition.
No competition is of course where Intel would like to be again but things are different now.

This, very expensive market monopoly play from Intel.
probably going to back fire on them horribly.
Maybe Intel could drag out the CPU shortage into 2023/24
The best Intel could achieve would be a slower loss of market share to AMD and that’s is assuming Intel plan to build CPU’s Both would be very unlikely to happen.
At worst Intel waste a ton of money and AMD beat them on an older higher return node.
I really think Intel shareholders need to take a look at who is making the decisions. The pandemic has probably allowed for a stay of execution, but Intel’s decision making seems a little manic.

#1 AMD has no 3nm chips on the roadmap for 2022
#2 Apple put in their orders in for 3nm years ago, long before Intel, what Intel are buying is not at the expense of Apple who are the number 1 priority for TSMC as they have a very long working relationship with Apple and will continue to have a very long relationship with them long after Intel have gone back to their own foundry expansion.
As usual Intel are making a lot of noise about how they are going to beat everyone and yet again and again and again... the low IQ among the tech press have fallen for empty Intel rhetoric. Its WCCF.
So Intel are buying up 10,000 a month wafers, in 2 years from now TSMC will be producing 80,000 wafers a month and Intel are not selling 80,000,000 GPU's per month. Look at that, rumour crapped on by simple common-sense.

Currently TSMC are producing 140,000 7nm wafers per month
80,000 3nm wafer per month in Q3 2022 is a conservative estimate, with an average of 800 dies per wafer that's 64,000,000 dies per month, Nvidia sold 20,000,000 Ampere GPU's, not per month, to date, Intel are not selling 3X as many GPU's per month as Nvidia has sold to date total.
Lets say they really did just buy most of the supply up to deny Apple and AMD access.
Lets do the maths.
To hurt Apple and AMD Intel would have to buy up 50,000 wafers every month, at least, at $20,000 each that's $1,000,000,000 per month, $12,000,000,000 per year, that cost to stick it to Apple and AMD.... i hope so because that is how Intel become bankrupt.

And supply is always increasing - they are always adding new machines and currently also building new factories
I am so glad there has never been a semi conductor shortage. Obviously more than enough capacity for any eventuality.
No way there is a 28 week waiting list for any order you place with TSMC because they have so many spare wafers they must use them as discus.
Yes we all love AMD and I would currently buy Ryzen but Intel still sell a lot of chips each year. Maybe they have made a mistake or maybe they will have decent competitive products for us to choose from by using this process.

There is no shortage on wafers there is a shortage of Interposers, but even that is gradually correcting its self as more people start manufacturing them to pick up the money that's to be made.
Nothing is forever but lets hope it stays that way

Existing demand for PC based systems is growing and its not going to stop growing.
Phones and Tablets are getting ever more powerful with larger chips in them, Samsung are already seeing them as mobile gaming devices to get in on the growing 3D high fidelity gaming sector which is why they are now stuffed with RDNA2 graphics
Steam finally figured out that their catalogue has value way beyond being a place to host all your games.
Elon Musk wants to play AAA games in his car which is why he's stuffing a PS5 like PC in to his latest cars.
Everyone now wants more and more computers in their cars even if you can't play battlefield 2042 in them.
The need for servers is ballooning out of control as everyone needs more online space which is why Intel, ARM, Nvidia and AMD will all grow in these sectors concurrently.

apple already has contract with Factory in india so wont effect them to much
Great news for Intel. They already out supply (and thus out sell) AMD by a monstrous magnitude. With their buying of TSMC wafers, of varying processes (including the 3nm mentioned), it'll further increase it's overall lead in supply and thus sales.

AMD are the second largest and also a partner, they are number 2

Great news for intel. Will production begin in time for intel's new gpu production or even Alder lake CPUs? Either way, should improve availability of products in the future. Good move.
