Intel OC Question: 266 FSB vs 200FSB

CPU is the 670J 3.8Ghz 2Mb L2 Cache. Standard FSB=200.

Question is I am about to upgrade my system next week when the X1900XTX & or 7800GTX512 arrive. I already have an Asus P5WD2Premium mobo & 2GB DDR2 5300 Ram ready to go. Just waiting to drop the Gfx card in.

My Options are:

1: Do I run this CPU @ FSB200 x 19= 3.8Ghz (default speed). Ram would only be operating @ 200 instead of 266.

2: Mild CPU underclock to FSB266 x 14= 3.724Ghz (mobo allows CPU lock downwards to either 14,15,16,17 multiplier) so Ram would be running @ default 266x4=1066.

3: Slight overclock FSB266 x 19= 5.054Ghz (mobo will handle it and my Thermalright XP90C is a very good cooler so should be no probs there either).

My main concerns are:

A: Will the increased FSB speed compensate for running the CPU @ a lower multiplier.

B: Does having a higher FSB help/hinder the CPU in keeping up with a high end GFX card.

Try both an benchmark, its the only way to be sure.
Sorry should have said mild FSB overclock (200>266). However 5Ghz is believe it or not nowhere near what this exact same CPU & stepping can achieve. 7.2Ghz is the tops with exotic cooling :eek: 5-5.5Ghz on air :D 6Ghz+ with water.

Go get a loan and buy some phase!

Using a lower multi and higher fsb should have no performance hit, provided the cpu speed is the same.

I dont understand what you mean with your ram, if its the stuff in your sig then its suppost to run at 200 anyway.

As for your second question, in not familiar with pentium chipsets but the fsb is the bit that talks to the rest of the components is it not, in which case a higher fsb will be better
 
that 5-5.5ghz is normally with daft setups like a TT sonic tower + 2x120mm deltas at full speed.
Why dont you go for a compromise and go 15x266 or 16x266? you still get an overclock, it wont fry the cpu, shouldnt need extra voltage and the ram will be at the right speed.
 
The spec in my sig is my current hardware. I have a new PCI-E + DDR2 system to build but waiting for OCUK to get the gfx card in mon/tues next week.

5-5.5Ghz on air with my Thermalright XP90C is possible as I have seen many others do it. Phase is only really if I wanna go for the 6-7Ghz+.

As for the FSB I will try 1066 first then benchmark to see if that is better than a higher multplier. When I have determined that presume my next step will be to increase volts until the rig is stable.
 
I'll be very impressed if you get 5054Mhz on air.. I'll be even more impressed if it lasts more than a month with the volts you'll have to put through it! :)
