Hi guys

looks like my old quad core system is on the way out. it has been flaky as hell lately and now i cant even get into windows without a crash and i only installed win7 again recently.

so, time for an upgrade. the thing is i am woefully out of touch these days.

are intel still king? i have a 2500k OCUK system for my workstation but at home i rarely play games so i dont want anything too expensive. probably £300 to spend on a CPU, RAM, MOBO combo

so, i5 2500k OC bundle or an AMD system.

to be honest it will mainly get used for the mrs to do a bit of work from home and for me to play the odd game BF3, colonial marines etc.

are the amd chips any good these days? i seem to remember the last time i looked that the AMD chips were a bit of a let down and still not comparable to intel.

thanks guys.

yes you will need a better cooler for OCing but budget is tight for one, onboard vga as well, so might be better to go trinity with amd option for better video etc for budget

1 x AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD580KWOHJBOX) £95.99
1 x ASRock FM2A55M-DGS AMD A55 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £44.99

won't be as fast as i5 but better video, so choice for tight budget.

cheers bro.

i will be using my current GPU. 580GTX so onboard isnt a problem. i also have a venom cooler i bought about 18 months ago that should be fine for OCing.

do ivybridge handle better than sandybridge? similar OC?

i have a 2500k here with a asus P8Z68-V here at work and i can get 4.4Ghz out of it :)

ivybridge will be fine, but then again in july the newer socket and cpu's will be out so can't comment on them, and as your using your own card the i5 would suit your more, check case etc and you should be fine, i use the same board so OC well, the Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 one is better but costs more but still in budget but it's choice of make tbh

i only use asus, have more than 200 in my asus account, only had 2 rma's in 10 years.

but everyone here says the GB one is the best for OCing, seems to be more stable and higher OC maybe, but i don't max mine and are happy with it, but the GB one can be added for your budget and features are almost the same on most now days unless you go high end, then you can pay as much as the cpu, which to me is daft, as most extra bits never get used or aren't needed either, just paying for the name or more reliable parts with sometimes high gold Content etc

I think this would complement your GTX...

There are a few reasons we like the Gigabyte boards:

Stable BIOS's
Dual BIOS feature
UK RMA
Not voltage locked
Nice PCI slot layout

thanks guys

would this cooler work?

Akasa AK-CCX-4002HP Venom CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366/AM2/AM3) OCUK dont sell them any more. wonder if i can find the bloody adaptors!

i get free delivery, so that is a bonus.

Is that your current CPU cooler? If so then provided you have a 1155 bracket you can use it. If you can't find it give Akasa a mail and see if they will send you one.

good news!

after furious messing around last night everything is working. thanks for your help guys, sorry to have wasted anyone's time. really cannot justify upgrading PC. would rather spend the cash on a tablet ;)
