Hi, just a quick question. I have managed to overclock this CPU from 2.66Ghz to 3.2Ghz with no problems but... after doing som benchmarks ive found that a speed of 2.81Ghz seems to provide the best performance boost. After 2.8Ghz the cpu seems to perform worse than it was at stock speeds...

I always thought the faster you get the cpu to run the better the performance boost? Am i wrong? Has anyone elce here got this chip and managed to overclock it and get a good boost from doing so?

Thanks!

Oh and heres my system specs just in case.

Intel Pentium D 805 @ 2.81Ghz 1.34v
1GB DDR2 667Mhz @ 563Mhz 1.8v
Intel 945P Chipset
ECS PF5 Extreme mobo

Just the FSB yes. the multi is locked at 20 so cant change that :(

The chipset can go to 1066Mhz FSB the memory to 667Mhz so im not stressing anything but the CPU well... i hope (think) so.

What are the benchmark numbers you're seeing to make you draw this conclusion? I set up an 805 system about a month ago and found it effortless to overclock. I saw big performance improvements, not just from 133 MHz to 166 MHz FSB, but all the way up until I quit trying at about 200 MHz.

EDIT: It was on a DS3 but I doubt it makes much difference at the level you're working on ATM.

Ive been using sisoft sandra mainly to test my overclocks

Heres some resaults:

@ 3.21Ghz Multimedia 34488 & 39442
@ 2.66Ghz Multimedia 36341 & 40424
@ 2.81Ghz Multimedia 38221 & 41254

As you can see the 2.81Ghz shows up faster.. dunno why.. also my it will over clock to 3.2ghz but theres some stabilitly issues

Ok, done some test with 3dmark06 and my cpu scores are:

@ 2.66Ghz 1260
@ 2.80Ghz 1341
@ 3.00Ghz 1011
@ 3.20Ghz 988

So for some strange reason.. after about 2.8Ghz the performance gets worse!!

  • What CPU cooler are you running
  • What are your idle and load temperatures?

Jim, he said he didn't change anything other than the FSB clock. That would mean that he did not fiddle with the memory... I hope. ;)

Nope no memory fiddleing lol

And its not throtoling.. i tured off the tm2 crud to make sure it didnt.

Im using the stock HSF
Idle Temp 51c @ 3.2Ghz 38c @ 2.66
Load Temp 61c @ 3.2Ghz 50c @ 2.66

PSU Should be fine... its a 550*** with plenty of Amps..

CPU Voltage is 1.38v - 1.41v according to the bios but sisoft sandra says its 2.27v!!! underload and 2.1v when not underload

I wouldn't take it for granted that it's not throttling just because you turned off a BIOS option. Try running Throttlewatch. 8xx series P4's are the hottest things about and you need to be applying really good cooling.

@OP - Try running SuperPi at your different OC's and post back your results.

I have a 805 happily running at 3.66, taken it all the way to 4Ghz but the Heat was too much for my setup.

You need to pace the memory up with the OC, otherwise it will hinder your attempts.

Also, did you check throttlewatch when your system is at 100% load on BOTH Cores ?? SP2004 is a good test for this.

I used that sp2004 and ran the cpu at 100% on both cores and no throttoling at all

And whats this Superpi?

The memory is not even being overclocked!

Even with the fsb set at 160 (default 133) the memory is still only running at 320Mhz x2 (640Mhz) and thats 27Mhz UNDER its max speed. Its DDR2 5300 (667Mhz)
