can get an Intel pentium D exetreme 3.46ghz for a resonable price, what are they like? any1 had experience with them?

Not really, low end Core 2 Duos can beat it.

If your motherboard doesn't support Core 2 Duo's then it's a steal at 20 quid. You won't get better or cheaper.

EVGA 680i SLi
Asus m2n32 WS
XFX 610i

and an old intel board, with a p4 3.4ghz in it, which it would replace

ah ive also got a Abit AW9D also, which has been gathering dust for ages, might slap it in that

Well it would be ok for the old Intel board, but I would try to pick up a used E2160 or E2180 for an extra tenner if you're going to be using any of the others.
