actually i know for fact that big companies like adobe and autodesk and many game developers are optimising their software for quad core processors and i think it’s good investments to go for quad core now because i believe by summer we gonna see a lot of benefits. core 2 duos will be obsolete by the end of the year. this won’t mean they will be useless just already behind
optimise and support are words, the only time you need to upgrade to a quad core is when those people and game developers say you NEED a quad core.
for instance, source runs easily, very easily on a single core yet they are updating it to support dual core, support, not need. yes you'll get a bump in fps if you are playign at a low res but you don't need 300fps when 150fps is plenty. it will enable modified source engines to do more work in future titles though. much like quake 3 had loads of games with a vastly improved q3 engine that needed more power.
fact is no games need a dual core yet, they support them and sup commanded when in big battles with huge unit counts does show a big improvement on min fps's with a dual core, but thats one of a list of games you can count on your fingers that benefit.
but then again, when it comes to the end of the year a £160 dual conroe maybe hitting 3.2Ghz overclocked(lotta, lotta, lotta heat) will be kinda pointless to get a dual core if you happen to be buying a new computer, but i wouldn't rush out to upgrade to a quad core for another year/two.
sounds like maybe the euphoria engine might be one of the first to really be pushing physics and interative enviroments to levels of cpu power we actually have now.
