Intel Q3 price drops

Prices almost always drop. As the fab process continues engineers work out kinks and generally speaking the marginal cost of production go down. Prices will go down and newer, higher-priced chips will take their place at the top and the cycle will continue.

The new Intel Penryn chips are expected to be out before the end of the year, pushing the prices of the Conroes and Kentsfields down further.

Pretty much just a 45nm Conroe shrink.

Should mean faster speeds due to less voltage being needed.

These prices ahve been known for over a month, yes they are real. Progress.

Come Q3 youll be able to choose either a 3GHz C2D or a 2.4GHz C2Q for $266...its all good :)

How are the new Penryn chips going to differ from the Core 2 Duo?
Penryn appears to be up to 20% faster than a similarly clocked Conroe, haven't used one myself but INTEL have been allowing certain reviewers to run 'specific' benchmarks on Penryn equipped machines and the results are looking good.

The current line-up of Conroe/Allandale processors will be dropping in price to allow for the newer chips and these forums will be full of people upgrading amazingly fast overclocked Conroe systems for even faster overclocked Penryn systems . . . lol it never stops :D

One thing about Penryn that I'm waiting to find out is if its possible to run on current P965 motherboards?

When Intel were testing the first batch they said that they worked on something like all the 775 boards they tested them on (9 in total I think it was) without any BIOS changes so it looks hopeful it'll be a simple case of dropping it in.

Jokester

yup, the baords intel are using now are VRM modified bad axe 2's

just need to wait and see...it might nto be supported but i may be possible to get it working at least...personally im going to assume it wont and be pleasantly surprised if it does ;p
