intel q6600 to a AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition any point in upgrading

you would be far better going for a q9450 or q9550 if your mobo supports it as they perform much the same as 955be.

If not it would be far more cost effective to just go i7

If that I7 does not fit into the mobo he has then no its not more cost effective.

Well thats stating the obivous but the I7 route offer better bang for buck than the Phenom II route espically if hes editing.

New PhenomII chip mobo ram = £350

New I7 chip mobo ram =£430 but is faster with more ram.

Phenom II is only gd for budget gaming rigs or as an am2 upgrade path.

Therfore I7 is more cost effective at the high end.

The Phenom 2 is not the fastest at encoding but it aint slow ether.
The OP did not mention anything about high end heavy encoding.

So the performance per buck is with the phenom 2 in general needs between the 2 thats why Intel user are jumping to it.

Is that Q6600 overclocked at all? If so then there's absolutely no point in making this 'upgrade'. While the Phenom II is a good chip, you're unlikely to notice any sort of difference that'd make it worth the investment.

If it's at stock and you're not interested in overclocking though then maybe.

sorry I buy decent stuff rather than the cheapest

I suppose the point of the matter is that it's pretty tough to buy bad components for either system as manufacturers have gone wild with copper-plated aluminium in order to charge £100 more for a motherboard than it's less-dolled-up cousin.

If you've got an Intel Q6600 that is nicely overclocked, then you won't really notice too much of a difference.

If you've got a Q6600 at stock then you probably will notice a difference.

If your games aren't struggling (i.e. fps dropping too low), then I wouldn't bother.

If you're after something that will make encoding a lot faster, then I'd save up for an i7. This the only reasonable "big" upgrade path for those on already good systems. If you're running an older pre-existing LGA775 or AM2+ system, then go for the fastest processor you can afford and fit in your motherboard (assuming you're desperate).

Otherwise wait for i7/i5.

i guess your a intel fan :p....

anyway the first question to the OP should be "what will you be using the system for?", if it's gaming then phenom II system or upgrade your current cpu . if it's encoding than save up for a I7 system.

Or you could buy a new motherboard and oc the q6600. The cheapest route and then save up for the i5's.

its stocked at 2.4ghz as it from a packard bell imedia x2414 pc. I thought that the AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition would be a great partner for my sapphire ati radeon 4890 overclocked version.

Stay with your current set-up until upgrade to Intel I5 or I7. Phenom does not offer any improvement over the chip you have.
