Hi All,

Great to be part of the forum. ;)

I don't have a large amount of money...

Got me a setup machine as follows:

Intel E6300 @ 2.8GHZ
2GB RAM
ATi 2900XTX
Windows XP Pro SP3

DFI Infinity - 975x Latest Bios for Quad Core.

Anyways, I want a new CPU With good overclocking potential or good performance per clock cycle.

I've purchased GTA4 and yes... Very buggy indeed (For me anyways)

I've heard the game is very CPU limited with all the physics and other things to deal with.

So, what do you guys think will be better? A Q6600 Or E8400

Oh, off topic a little... what’s better 2x 2900XTX (Crossfire) or 1x 3870x2 single card?

Thanks in advance

Liam

If you want to play GT4, get Q6600 as GT4 needs quad core (that's what i heard).

I was in the same position as you a few weeks ago and decided went for Q6600. And i'm glad i did as managed to OC-ed to 3.3GHz on air.
My main use of PC for photos editing and also gaming :D

Hope that help

I have e8400 and 4850 and @ 1440x900, 60 distant fade, everything else on medium the game runs at 20-35 fps outside. It looks great and it feels relatively smooth. I think the game poorly optimised though, so its not the cpu's fault. A e8400 is more then enough to run this game, its just your card I'd upgrade, since it would bottleneck your cpu.

Plus, if your a gamer, a dualcore is a better option, unless you can OC your quad.

If you buy Q6600 just now you will get the GO stepping anyway. I've got the GO stepping version and i think run cooler than B3 anyway.

p.s: didn't notice that either, E6300 to 3.8GHz???

I will probably be going against the grain but I reckon a Core 2 Dual (E5200/E8400) is a better purchase! :D

P.S: Holy ****! how did you get an E6300 to 3.8GHz!

Sorry 2.8GHz! On the Eee PC Notebook Small keys!

Ok, Little bit confused now... Quad or Dual!

As for the Graphics card i'll prolly get the 3870x2 as they're cheap as chips...

I'll try an do a little more research in a second... The dual core seems to be going cheaper and have better out of the box clocks. But the cache is less.

Don't know if i've just hit a snag... My FSB is 1066 by the looks of things and the E8400 requires a bit more speed?

The following link does not seem to show the E8400 listed but the quad is.

Thanks for the help guys.

It depends, i would say E8400 in general. A Core 2 clocked at decent speed's will kill most quads in most games. Most games like speed over number of cores.

But GTA4 is a different story, it NEED's a quad (as said before).

I would go dual with a nice mobo and hunt +4GHz.

So many thread for Dual or Quad like in this case.
If you only using it for gaming ONLY main priority, your best bet is Dual but if you using it for applications, i.e. Photoshop CS, video editing and also gaming, probably Quad suits you better.
But for some reason GTA 4 needs Quad to run better :)

Have you checked that your mobo will support the E8400? You may not actually have any choice about the CPU.....

Yes, Few posts up^

Looks like Quad is the way forward i guess.

Thanks for the help guys!
