Hi,
Seems to me that the above cpu is just a down clocked extreme intel. Is that true? The only other difference I've noticed is that the extreme is 45nm? and has a L3cache. I guess the 45 nm is what costs so much, allows more overclocking I expect.
Thanks.

The only difference with the extreme's are that you get an unlocked multi,

The extreme you are on about is not based on the q6600 but a newer 45nm quad. You can get the same chip with a locked multi but I have no idea what that is.

Extreme's are for fools with more money than sense.

My q6600 is a kentsfield, haven't seen much improvement from 2.4 to 3.0 ghz. Was trying that out since I'm not getting the performance I need from my system in games at a high level. Then again, only what I've uncovered so far, is that the kentsfield ones don't overclock that well. Seems like a new graphics card is in order. Have sent a webnote to overclockers asking their opinion then will place an order for the cpu or graphics card any day now. The new case will just have to wait.

All Q6600s are Kentsfield core chips. The later, 45nm ones have a Q9 prefix.
Q6600s overclock reasonably well. Most will hit 3.2GHz without too much effort. 33% OC is pretty good going. A large number will also hit about 3.4GHz, with a handful 3.6GHz.
