Intel's LGA775 platform is going to have quite a long life cycle. Intel plans to keep it alive for at least two more years and it should be possible to buy LGA775 chipset and motherboard even in 2011.

Intel's P45, G45, G43 and G41 chipsets are being refreshed and they should be good for mainstream and value in the next two years. The key thing in the refresh is DDR3 support, which should keep the platform alive and kicking.

In 2011 when it comes to desktop CPUs Intel should have at least three major sockets, LGA775, LGA1366 and LGA1156, and it's possible that there might be some more. If you count the Atom socket, you can already claim it has four. It is also highly likely that Intel might be selling some LGA775 chips and boards even beyond 2011.

If this is true then it just shows how popular the platform is, I can't say I know another socket that has had such longevity!

They are also going to be cheaper still then the i5 platform for OEM's, and are still powerful enough for mainstream / value market segements.

OEM market is notoriously cheap and will haggle about 50p on a component due to the numbers involved.

Boards such as the Gigabyte P45-Extreme have always had DDR3 support from day 1 so I don't see what development costs intel will have had here, and allows them to milk the chipset for even more money without too much if any cost.

I see no real reason to upgrade from my q6600 yet, and I've had this for a year (which is a record for me without upgrading..)

Socket A had a very long life, considering.

that went from roughly 600mhz chips up to 3200 rating (not mhz admittedly) chips.

I do hope that intel don't kill off 775 just yet.

Great news - while i can still bleed this system dry with upgrades i will.

I was tempted to buy a Q**** chip now in case they started to become hard to get hold of in a few months time - as i'll be putting my e5200 into a HTPC - but armed with the above info i'll wait until i'm actually ready to build.

It will start to become the value socket, by 2011 all 775 will be is some varient of the G41 chipset I would think. There don't seem to be any new mid/high end 774 chips due.

That's great news for me as I still run a 775 on XP for my gaming.
Nice to know I can build myself a completely new system & use this one for my server/browser/whatever for Many years to come.
