How reliable is this

ive got a tuniq tower on a stock C2D e6600

its reporting and idle temp of 51

this seems a little high for a unclocked processor

how reliable is it ? and crucially, how low should it be ?

Give Core Temp ago and compare the two.

That does seem high, the Tuniq Tower is installed ok.

standard vcore

and using AS3

and CPU wasnt lapped

just tryed core temp

that reports about the same.

i think its correctly installed, ive plugged the fan controller in, and can hear the fan speed going up and down

i think my case may just be hot, ive got an original Lian Li V1000, the one that they had to bring out the plus version to rectify the airflow problems for. May have to work on an intake fan to get the temps down ..

Hey MrLOL what is the difference between the two? I have the V1000 Plus.

Well, the case certainly wont help, but thats still stoopidly high...

AS3 is very old, try some Arctic Cooling MX-2... I just got some and it's fantastic, easiest paste to work with i've used and much better than AS3 or even AS5 for that matter... I would guess applied correctly that it should give you approx 5-6 deg temp drop...

Lapping the CPU will give you an extra 2-8deg to play with depending on how bad the IHS is to start with. If you dont want to lap it yourself there are plenty of places that'll do it for you, but TBH it's easy enough to do.

mine hasnt got the fan on the side, nor any of the fancy ducting over the CPU

just a single 120mm exhaust fan, and the will of god to try to drag some air in through the front holes.

however having said that, if my case was causing the problem, im guessing the HSF shouldnt be cold to the touch

ive just taken the case side off now, and it doesnt even feel slightly hot in there, like i said, the cooler is cold to the touch.

think maybe i need to get some new TIM and re-do the seating of the cooler.

Mine runs at 55Degrees on my tuniq fully loaded and thats overclocked. Try reseating it. There must be something wrong somewhere.

Lap it, use some good paste and spread it really thin & watch your temp drop by over 10deg ;)

I agree wet/ dry sandpaper 800grit to remove nickel move onto 1500grit. If you want bling factor move onto 2400grit. 30 minutes work and you will have a nice drop in temperatures over all 4 cores. As monster munch mentions -10 drop in temps is realistic :D. I lost -10 lapping my B3 Q6600:D

Snip

Lap it... You know you want to ;)

we all know you want to:p

Dont forget to use a small sheet of glass, nick it from the bathroom for the lapping, dab the water onto the wet/dry sandpaper using your finger or water dropper.

20 times up/down rotate 90 degrees 20 times up/down Until nickel plate is all removed using 800grit. Use permanent black marker draw criss cross lines from corner to corner and across the middle. great indicator for even surface. Guide done. Support is with you. Can you feel the lapping force? Get lapping, post your results and pics you know you want to.............
