Hi

X-bit Labs have an article about the release of the “Intel Core Extreme” processor in Q4 this year...

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20070801221842.html

A small quote from the article...

Initially it was projected that Intel’s new quad-core processors based on improved micro-architecture that is usually referred to as “Penryn” will be launched in the first quarter of 2008, but the company has changed its plans and now such chips will be available already in the fourth quarter of 2007, in time to compete against AMD Phenom processors based on the K10 micro-architecture.

Enjoy the read :)

Repost.

I know 'cos I made the thread about it. ;)

It is only one CPU coming this year.

Going to be a 3.33Ghz CPU with an unlokced multi to cost around $1000 USD

I wonder what the chances of a Penryn working in a P35 mobo are?
Intel are very annoying in the fact that their mobo/new cpu support isnt all that good.

Desktop Penryn, Yorkfield and Wolfdale WILL work in P35 boards.

i wouldn't say that was true really, c2d worked in newish P4 boards, penryn will work in newish c2d boards along with c2d and xeon, and p35 is meant to take c2d, penryn, xeon and possibly P4 (not sure about the last one) where as almost every amd architecture review means a new mobo/cpu combos. only exception is opteron/939 (afaik)

I would.
Intel have been doing it for years. Countless times they've released a new CPU that either wont work on current chipsets, forcing us to buy a new mobo, or will only work on certain current gen chipsets, even though the socket is allways the same.
They used to do it all the time.
I'd be impressed if we could use the next few processors from Intel on the P35s. Prehaps they've changed their ways.

Hardly.
Socket A mobos from the start, like the KT7A-RAID, could still run the top end XPs like the 3200 Bartons.
Socket 939 could run the starting single core, then all the dual cores.
The only blip on AMDs part was 754.
AMDs next gen Phenom processors will work on current AM2 boards as well.

No it didnt, dont you remember the lack of motherboards supporting c2d when it was released ?

I got hold of a E6600 (ES) last june and the only motherboard that would run it was a custom modded badaxe 1.

It was an agonizing week or so wait until the newer rev badaxe was released and the Asus P5W-DH.
