There has been no confirmation whether AM3 is DDR3 only, or DDR2 and DDR3

It can be either, but not both. There are going to be DDR2 AM3 boards (pictures of them are already floating about). They're almost identical to AM2+ boards, but I expect the marketing droids think AM3 sounds new and impressive.

There is no reason an AM3 board cannot handle both, but not at same time, like P45

Timing and bus loading issues with the Phenom's IMC mean its not possible to do a dual DDR2/DDR3 AM3 board.

But going on the release date the 32nm i7's should be rearing their head round then which will be even more power efficient than the current 45nm i7's.
