Faced with increasing competitive pressure from AMD, Intel apparently has accelerated its launch schedule of its new Core microarchitecture. While Woodcrest, which will carry the Xeon 5100-series designation, was always scheduled for a Q3 introduction, chief executive Paul Otellini on Wednesday confirmed that the company will also be announcing the desktop processor "Conroe" (Core Duo E4000 and E6000 series) as well as the mobile CPU "Merom" (Core Duo T5000 and T7000 series) in the third quarter. All three variants will be shipping "in volume

Hehe, looks like we will be seeing conroe earlier than expected....probably.

Intel should have waited it out and kept on working on the processor instead of falling into AMD's trap

sweet my next cpu will be intel conroe for sure

For sure I will be getting one too! But I have a funny feeling that this tit-for-tat scenario sounds very "rushed" I hope that the processor quality is not affected by the new release date,

Wasn't Conroe always supposed to come out in Q3 2006?
Yeah but now its scheduled to come early Q3, i.e. July. Really this news is old. Intel has been hinting for months that Conroe is way ahead of schedule.

wow june/july thats actually like 3 months away ;)

Looks like summer times the best time to upgrade + we will be getting Nvidia/ATis next gen beast this late summer/fall also.

what kinda memory/speeds are we talking about for these?
also what about the motherboards?

At stock the memory will be at DDR2 533. Motherboard support will be on Intel's i965 chipset and i975 rev. 304 and following (don't go buying i975 boards now if you want Conroe support).

Cost is apparently:

# E6700: 2.66 GHz / FSB 1066/ 4 MB shared L2 cache - $530
# E6600: 2.40 GHz / FSB 1066/ 4 MB shared L2 cache - £316
# E6400: 2.13 GHz / FSB 1066/ 2 MB shared L2 cache - $244
# E6300: 1.86 GHz / FSB 1066/ 2 MB shared L2 cache - $209

There are two other versions but I haven't seen the prices for them as of yet.
