I used to have this working but no it just doesnt work so matter what I do.
Set the max core clock to 42 (not the multiplier in the cpu features section) and turned on intel turbo boost.
This would clock down my CPU while idle to around 1.5 and then put it to 4.2 when in games.
It doesn't seem to be doing that anymore and I cannot figure out why.

If I just put the multiplier up to 42, its always at 42, which I don't want.

Any ideas?

I thought it was Intel SpeedStep that clocked down when the CPU was idling and Turbo that boosted up when the CPU was under load and under a certain temperature?

EDIT; Sorry, just looking for some clarification :) Don't mean to question you at all.

to be honest, I have no idea, I just know it works with turbo boost :P
All I want is for it to work with a 42 core overclock, it just wont do it.

Speedstep does reduce the multiplier when idle.

What are your system specs?

Could this be related to windows power profiles? Balanced, power saver, high performance etc. High performance would clock it at the upper limit you have set.

System Specs are:

i5 2500k @ 4.2ghz / CM Hyper 212 EVO / Gigabyte 670 OC SLI / MSI P67A-GD53 B3 / Kingston HyperX Blue 8Gb /
WD 2tb Storage Drive / BenQ GW2750HM - Corsair AX750 / Samsung 830 256gb /

And I know...I just want it to be 4.2 instead of the default 3.2, and also reduce the clock when idle. I used to have it doing it, but it doesn't do it anymore.
It does it fine when its left on default.
Using the multiplier to up it makes it at 4.2 all the time, which is not what I want.
Power settings are on balanced

Did you change anything in BIOS before it stopped working? Also have you tried a lower max core clock? (i.e 40)
