Intel vs AMD for cubase

Im currently using the system below for multitrack recording using cubase, I run all of the instruments in and use a tonne of vst plugins such as amplitube and addictive drums and effects. Now all the plugins get load balanced between the cores, what I'm wondering for when I upgrade next is whether it's best going for an amd 6 core for the extra 50% of processingpower over my current CPU, or will say an i7 930 with it's hyperthreading give me more power? Iv had a look around on google but no real definative advise to which will be better, both systems will be under high end water cooling and overclocked, no banzai clocks tho, it has to work flawlessly for hours on end at full whack. Has anyone had any experience??

Looks like it comes down to price vs performance. With AMD, you're looking at swapping the CPU, with Intel, you will have to replace the whole lot.

How much more performance the Intel i7-930 will provide over a 1055T / 1090T + 790FX, and how much more will you have to spend?

With the lack of feedback from users and benchmarks, I'd also sit on it and let the dust settle a bit, to have more conclusive points of view.

Then again, The next generation of processors is set to appear in about 6 months. By the time you know what to upgrade to, how much better would the upgrade be, and how out-of-date it will be in 6-8 months times.

No answers, just more questions :)

6 core amd is a fraction faster in anything that can actually use 6 cores as we showed on these very forums.

but if a program cant use the cores than i7 is faster because it has more efficient cores.

Cheers guys, more questions to think about lol, il stick with this socket I guess till bulldozer comes out and see if it's all it's cracked up to be, in the meN time I guess a 6 core will suffice if it does indeed edge the i7 in multithreaded tasks, I'm sure the wife would be happier with the news than a full upgrade ;)

Cubase isn't at all effective at utilising the effects of Hyperthreading, and unfortunatly never has. In many cases (i do mean many), it actually offers no benefit, and often causes many more problems with glitching. Most i7 users (and older P4 HT user) are told by Steinberg to disable it if problems arrise.

Definatly go with AMD 6-core and overclock it. Physical cores scale really well in Cubase 5.5+, but less so with Cubase 4 or lower. At the moment, only the 980 i7 @ six cores is faster (single CPU) or dual socket solutions, but they are much more expensive.

If your running Cubase 5 64-bit, get 8gb of RAM whilst your at it :D;)

Cheers for than bud, that's what I was wondering, knowing that makes it much easier to decide :) I am indeed running version 5.1 and 64bit. Il look I to anther 4gb, I have noticed it running very close to 4gig when busy.

cubase (and most other audio programs for that matter) will be more ram dependant, anything above 2GHz (be it a dual/quad etc) will be fine

It's an easy decision tbh, if the software utilises 6-cores and you currently have a compatible mobo, go for the X6. Nothing wrong with them tbh.
