Hi guys,

I just bought an Intel X25-M 80gb SSD and have been scouring the forums for advice on how to install it with a fresh Win 7 install. I think i've figured out most of the details, but with regards to the firmware, would it be advisable to update the firmware before installing Win 7?

How do I go about doing this? Do I plug the SSD in as a secondary and update via my current OS on my existing HDD? Is there an official program from Intel that will do this?

Also, what's the deal with formatting these SSDs? Do I need to format before the Win 7 install?

Cheers guys.

i have one of these ssd's and pleased with it. this is what you can do.
dl latest fw from intel site'enables trim on ssd'.
burn to cd using iso software..
boot from cd and flash ssd.
install win 7.
go to intel site dl ssd toolbox.
type in cmd in search box in cmd type.
'fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 0' to enable trim i win 7.
set toolbox to optimize once a week.
reboot into bios and switch to ahci.
windows 7 will create and format partitions on the ssd automatically unless you have more than 1 partition.
hope this helps.

Cheers for the reply and advice pooley.

is it wise to change to AHCI after win 7 installation? I remember reading somewhere that you should change to AHCI before installing. I could be mistaken...

And when I'm booting from CD and updating the SSD firmware, I presume at this point the setting should not be AHCI?

No your right, i installed mine without AHCI and omg what a ball ache it was to change, even follwing the guides to change in reg edit it was problematic. I set AHCI again and refotmated ....all ok now :D

The Intel docs clearly state that the firmware update can be performed in either IDE or AHCI mode with a few exceptions but since you are running an Intel chipset it should be no problem. I've updated the firmware four times on three different Intel drives now in AHCI mode without any trouble. Also the firmware won't update if the controller is in RAID mode.

I have the same mobo and the same SSD but when I enable AHCI mode the system won't boot into windows - is this because I didn't have it enabled when I installed vista 64?

Don't really fancy re-formatting :/

Im having a similar problem with a Samsung SSD. Its been in my laptop for a few months and works very well, but I decided to put on my ip35pro.

I cant figure how how to get win7 to boot of off my sata dvd drive. It just ignores it and all i get is a message that it cant find bootmgr and to press C-A-D.

If i change back to IDE it works, but is really slooooooow.
