Hi guys im kinda planning ahead as will be buying parts separately as i can afford them. ive recently started video editing with a 1080p aee magicam and making videos of my gaming so when i upgrade from my fx8350 i want some ooomph.

My question really is this:

Which of these combos offers best performance?

Asus z97 maximus vii formula + 4790k or

Asus x79 rampage iv formula + 4820k

the x79 option is about £40 cheaper with the 4790k not on offer. I already have an xspc waterblock compatible with both sockets. Many thanks in advance, damien.

id also have to buy ddr4 ram then wouldnt i? so a 16gb kit would add extra cost. i have 8gb ddr3 already so was thinking of just getting another 8gb kit. Price wise do you think x99 will be a lot more expensive especially as the 5820k is 6 core.

Even so the release of x99 could see a possible reduction to clear x79 hardware which would be the time to buy if i have the funds.

Ram prices aren't that bad for ddr4 to be honest. Motherboards are likely to be £200+ and nobody knows about the 5820k yet

I definitely agree with you all I'm definitely better off waiting and see what kind of pricing x99 platform and ddr4 brings and the difference in price to existing x79 setups. If it's not massively more expensive the 5820k would be the best choice budget wise wouldn't it being 6 core instead of 4 even if it is clocked slower?

You will see a decrease in price for the x79 setups on x99 release. So depending on those implications you can act. However i can not recommend buying "new" into a socket with no possible future such as x79.
If you would consider second hand goods then yeah why not, should be many off loading there systems for x99 and you could grab a fine deal :).
But if it has to be brand new then personally x99 is the logical and newest most powerful option you could choose. Can you wait till September though ?

If you need to buy now ,, and absolutely cannot wait then id say Z97 and a i7 4790K is a better option as you have the broadwell upgrade available.

im in no rush no its kind of an as and when finances allow buying another piece of the puzzle. my fx8350 isnt bad at rendering videos and i get good gaming performance i just want more oomph haha. plus i also play fsx so an intel cpu would help a lot.

If Z77 is anything to go by, then X79 won't drop in price that much. An Ivybridge cpu is still around the same as a Haswell one.
