For those that don't want an integrated GPU and don't bother overclocking, the Intel Xeon E3-1230 V3 might be a worthy upgrade from older CPU's.

Like previous Xeon 1230 chips, this seems a hidden gem for the mainstream market. Previous Xeon 1230 chips didn't use dodgy TIM either. For someone looking at a 4770 (Non K) or 4770s the Xeon would be a cheaper same spec alternative.

It is based on Haswell 22nm arch, has the full 8mb cache as 4770K does. It is essentially a 4770K minus overclocking and IGPU which is good for temps, but priced around £100 less than the 4770K / 4770 at launch (Although some places will hike). Overall power use is less and runs cooler.

Worth keeping an eye out for these if considering upgrading, due very soon.

C'MON mate, don't spread disinfo around. Xeons are not magical and use the same TIM as the IB and Haswell i-s. First result on google - http://www.overclock.net/t/1285271/...idge-processors-plagued-by-the-same-cheap-tim

But I agree, the 1230 v3 is tempting. Couple it a C226 mobo from SuperMicro or Tyan and some ECC RAM and you have a cheap, stable, fast beast, with working VT-d.

On the other side if you put the same money into an overclocked 4670K build, you'll get at least 25% better performance.

From what I've already read, the E3 1230 V3 is incompatible with desktop boards despite being skt 1150. If you want to use this CPU you'd have to buy a workstation motherboard.

The 1155 E3 V2 Xeons are however compatible with 1155 desktop boards I personally have one on a Asus Gene-Z Gen 3.

Edit: The E3 1230 V2 uses the same dodgy TIM as IB.

Something that has changed since the V1/2 E3's however is that the ones ending in 5 (I.E E3-1245) used to have higher clocked iGPU's than their i7 counterparts (usefull for quicksync), but this time their just as fast.

Any updates on availability? For example are they available in retail in US perhaps?

2 weeks in the UK. Around £180 at launch like the previous 1230 V2 (some places may hike).

Great chip if you don't plan on overclocking, it's basically i7 performance for i5 price.. keep a decent resale value as well..

If your not over clocking the TIM issue is absolutely irrelevant.

In fact, my IvyBridge Core i3-3220 is running passively as we speak at less than 50C load and wouldn't expect any different from the Haswell replacement for it.

Desktop boards don't support ECC and VT-d is only officially available on Q87.

The 4-bin overclocking of SB and IB non-K is no more.

UK sellers will have Xeon stock by 2nd of July.

The TIM will degrade in a few years.

I've just ordered one of these, hopefully this will work on a Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP.

Is there any place I can pre-order?
Yes, but this is a OcUK owned board, they don't allow competitors to be discussed.

UK sellers will have Xeon stock by 2nd of July.
I've seen one place that claims to have stock. We will see when I get mine.
