Im looking at the Xeon series for a numbercruncher workstation, mainly only because ive heard others mention them here for that use.
Why would they be better than say an i7 ?
Are the Xeons easily obtainable ?
What are the latest series (reference sheets would be nice) ?
The FSB's seem kinda low, howcome ?
Waiting around for i5/i9's isnt really an option, things need to come together pretty sharpish.

Any input would be greatly appreciated :D

They are not any better than the desktop CPU apart from you can use two chips and the mother boards have some nice features.

How serious a work station are you wanting ? I think the fastest out of the box xeons are about 3.4 Ghz.

It is going to be used for serious computational fluid dynamics, pretty huge budget including peripehrals and software.

Is it only the Xeons that can do dual CPU ?
Fastest Intel lists is -
Intel® Xeon® Processor X5492a 3.40GHz 12MB 1600MHz 150W 4core
or
Intel® Xeon® Processor W5580 3.20GHz 8MB 4core 130W 6.4GT/sa 1333/1066/800

Will have to look up the prices/availability on them, and also performace comparisons to mainstream CPUs.

Any other input ?
