I'm going to building a server to colocate to run gameservers off. I'm very (very very) new to the idea of using C2D. I've been using AMD64 CPUs (my first was a 3400+, most recent a 4400+) for years for my servers, however, I'm tempted by the fact of using a Conroe.
The 4MB cache certainly won't do any harm I'm sure on the selected models, how do you think, say a 6300, compares to a 3800+, consdering they're in the same price range. The same question as you go further up the price range. £200 gets you a 4600+ in AMD terms, it could also get you (if you scrape the This week only offer) a 6600 retail. OK, perhaps an AMD 5000+ would be a better comparison.
I'd only be guessing if I thought a 6300 gave you more bang for buck than a X2 3800+
