I was having a convo with a lady today about intelligence and this got me thinking - what is intelligence and how do you measure intelligence. As we are all human, i believe there is a basic level of intelligence that is accepted whether socially or mentally. Take for example, someone who comes out with a first class degree will be considered intelligent but, is education a yardstick for measuring intelligence?
Do the society dictates what is accepted as a form of intelligence or what needs to be done for someone to be accepted s intelligent - Education, a good career, well paid job etc?

I wanna guage people's insight and opinion into this and see what we all got to say.

Intelligence is very difficult to define and nearly impossible to measure. It's quite common to get people who perform brilliantly academically but you talk to them and they seem as thick as two short planks. And the opposite is also very common. People only seem to measure intelligence by academic ability which is only a small part of what intelligence is.

I stopped reading there. ;)

Intelligence. Well what to say the old "academic genious" vs the streetwise "intelligent" thug.

Both are intelligent, both excel in different situatuations.

Agreed

Why is that? Is this due to the society we live in?

Yeah right

I'd love nothing more than to have an inteligent convo with my old lady, but to be honest she defies laws and math...

I swear to god she'd 'burn a salad...'

She reminds me of those Churchil Nodding Dogs...

I can't imagine any biological reason why it would be like that so it probably is purely social. In evolutionary terms the opposite should be true.

Damn, knew I was getting something wrong in my career, I'm meant to be unable to cope...

As for the query on intelligence. The first thing I think it is NOT is memory capability. I know a number of people with excellent memories, but have bugger all ability to logically process anything.
Vice versa, measuring say a non-uk resident who may have limited vocabulary on their academic ability would probably result in them not scoring well, despite the fact that they may be very bright.
My personal view is the best measure for real IQ is the ability to conceptualise abstract subjects and analyse them. Seriously thick people simply don't get this and never will, regardless of whether or not they know every answer on Mastermind.
