I've read quite a few vampire books, mainly from the 19th century. I'm on the lookout for a modern book or preferably a series which is adult in content and with ideally no element of romance at all. If the vampire is the main character, even better.

I've nearly finished Julie Kagawa's The Immortal Rules but am on the lookout for something more gritty.

-Not Twilight!
-Not Dracula or similar, obviously that's been done
-Not anything which focuses on romance as a main theme. Sleaze is fine.

Anyone have any ideas?

You could check out the Anne Rice collection? Interview with a Vampire, Queen of the Damned, I read a few more and some are a bit romantic but its not really the main theme although some of them do get 'weird' so read up a bit to see which ones you may like.

Edit: Git!

Lol! Synchronized posting.:p

Not the strictest definition of Vampires but the Watch series (Night watch, Day watch, Twilight watch, Last watch) by Sergey Lukyanenko are brilliant and contain vampires.

Try Anno Dracula.

A very good and very different book about vampires, set in the Victorian era after Dracula has become the Prince of England. Its not about Dracula but more about all the other types of vampires in London ( i don't want to say too much).

I thought it was excellent.

+1

Came here to recommend it :p not usually my kinda thing but I love the Watch series.

I've read A LOT of vampire literature. I went through a phase of what I'd call extensive research into them a few years ago. No idea why, I just found them interesting. Bit weird I know.
I still do to a certain extent. I can whole heartedly recommend that you avoid Anne Rice novels....way too poncey and romantic. I got fed up after Queen of the Damned.
Necroscope starts off strong but then just gets totally weird and loses the plot.
A few I'd recommend for a start:
Salems Lot by Stephen King.
Midnight Mass by F. Paul Wilson is a great read.
I Am Legend
Twelve - Jasper Kent

If you like graphic novels/comics then check out American Vampire and 30 Days of Night.

It's difficult to find decent Vampire novels these days that don't make then out to be romantic, loving, deeply complex creatures.
The best are when they are written as blood-thirsty horrifying monsters :D

Thanks. So you can understand my problem. I have read loads too, though mostly 19th century ones, plus a tonne of films.

Any modern book series you can recommend?

What is the setting for this series? That's very important.

Harry Keogh is a Necroscope, someone who can talk to the dead, and the first book covers him from a child in the UK up to going to work for the British Intelligence ESPER division.

Along the way he discovers vampires, the Wamphyri, exist and through the books he travels to the vampire place of origin.

I don't want to say too much but I will say this is probably the best series of books I've ever read. The vampires are horrific the whole storyline is superb and there's a few twists and turns along the way.

I need to get these for my Kindle.

<edit> What I will add is the first 5 books are great, after that I didn't enjoy them as much.
