As topic, really wanna upgrade as I'm having so much problems with my PC atm, but would rather wait till the newest stuff is out there.

Whats the latest info on intels final incarnation of SandyBridge? wasnt it called Ivy or something?

Sandybridge-E will be the new SB chip, will run you a small fortune for not much benefit though.

Ivybridge is a 22nm die shrink of SB with stacked transistors iirc.

Expect IvyBridge next year.

You cannot go wrong with a current i5/i7 sandybridge build now.

The latest SB motherboards will, I believe, support IvyBridge, however a new range if Intel motherboard chips are due around the same time as IB, Z77 or something like.

You will always be waiting for next gen stuff ;)

Andi.

you have a good pc already, why do you need to upgrade?

and the other guys are right - SB_E will be very expensive and not really worth it. ivy bridge will fit in some/all (not sure) current 1155 motherboards and will be made on a smaller 22nm process, so will probably be quite a bit better.

you'd have to wait like 6-10 months for ivy bridge though.

amd's bulldozer is coming out soon, so definitely hold off until the benchmarks for that are out - it might be pretty awesome.

While I agree with the sentiments of your overall post, none of us know if there is anything benefit yet because no one knows how they perform.

Its mad how so many of these posts get answered with pure speculation.

I think it's safe to say the relative merits of SB-E over SB will not be worth it. Some struggle to justify an i7 over an i5 now, not to mention the fact most will not need the clocks they run their current SBs at.

Perhaps not, perhaps it will be very price competitive with the current models. I am not seeing it somehow though.

Perhaps to clarify further, why hold out for SB-E to buy SB-E when you can buy SB now and wait for Ivy?
