Intentionally dropping visual settings for better visuals?

I don't do it terribly often as my PC has no issues but one example is Borderlands 3.
I don't sit very close when playing that game as I sit back with a controller, a good 7 1/2 feet away from the 27" 1440P display, so I turn off TAA as it just blurs everything.
Dropping from 1440P native to 1080P has a 1% change in clarity.
On top of this ambient occlusion darkens scenes way too much hurting visibility.
I have to squint and try hard to focus on what is on screen with max settings, but with those adjustments I don't have to.

Any of you in a similar boat?

Examples of idiots defending bad graphical techniques.

Overly contrasty look, overshot bloom... I swear it is just the people with bad monitors that do this but heck even games come with overdone settings.

Nearly 8ft away from a 27" screen?! That sounds like a desktop monitor designed to be sat directly in front of.

Why would you do that? Obviously you aren't going to notice any difference between resolution at that distance with that screen size, you are too far away.

Yeah, I'm more impressed that you're able to sit so far away from such a tiny screen. Exceptional eyesight! I sit perhaps 1.5' away from a 38" screen

Never played Borderlands games but in general terms ambient occlusion just adds shadow depth to recesses and contact [points between two surfaces and does exactly as designed. If things get too dark to see after enabling it then your monitor settings are out of whack!

Motion blur, film grain and chromatic aberration are the only things I really turn off. Neither do anything to improve image quality but add an artifical effect to mimic a physical artefact of film/lenses (or try to but just ends up being a distraction).

Motion Blur, Vignette and Chromatic Aberration are the first things to turn off in any game.

Bloom is usually overdone, that usually gets turned off or low.

DoF depends on the game. Generally set to low or off.

Yeah, my eyes are just under 2ft from a 34" Ultrawide desktop monitor.

And 8ft from a 77" Gaming TV.

I can't imagine being 8ft from a 27" TV now. It's not 1997 anymore.

My main bug bear is games that allow people to drop a setting to gain an advantage. Like games that permit people to drop the foliage render distance so you, with your settings at maximum, think you're laying prone in a field of wheat or a sat hiding in a bush but to them you're a ******* great big target lying out in the open.

Yep, I can't wait until LOD pop-in is a thing of the past.

Arma and Dayz spring to mind, low4pro settings which i'll admit to having abused.

Phone camera is not great but here I try to show an example.

Just letting the VA monitor do it's own thing, looks better to me...

Desktop. ViewSonic Elite XG270QC. Other screen I sit from is the Gigabyte M27Q.

Borderlands 3 with no AO and TAA off.

From the high res image thread from another user.

AO on with TAA.

Looks good in a screenshot, trash for gameplay, contrasty image and AO over darkens everything.
