Interactive Animation Software

I was wondering if there was any software available to create animations you can interact with apart from Flash?

I want to create an animation for a family tree which expands as you click on the peoples photographs. I am guessing Flash is the best option but having limited skills using it I was hoping there might be something similar but more straight forward.

i'm thinking it'd be pretty tricky to find something more straight forward than flash? i consider it pretty damn intuitive?

although the new microsoft offering to compete with flash is apparently going to be pretty decent (not even sure if its out or not yet) - but their photoshop competitor was dire
