Hey guys,
I'm sure a lot of you more knowledgable foes on the board will know all about HDCP already and I know stuff has been mentioned on here before but for everyone else this is quite an interestin article to think about and may make you reconsider your options :) Wish i had thought about it before I bought my tft!!

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/ati_nvidia_hdcp_support/

So before you spend that 300 quid on a monitor you expect to last a good few years or 400 quid on a graphics card that you expect to do everything you want for the next few years maybe think again?

I never new this.

Simply put, none of the AGP or PCI-E graphics cards that you can buy today support HDCP.

That includes the x1900 and 7800 ranges as well.
Very interesting.

Yup, so if you were thinkin of gettin a graphics card which HD movies in mind for future proofing think again.. (same with monitors!)

Am just thinking about some of the posters on this forum that said there waiting for the new HDCP supporting monitors before upgrade there monitor..

This is just another one of ATI and Nvidia ways to make people go out and buy a new highend graphics cards..

Yea thats what I was thinking, I see it as another sneaky way of ATI and Nvidia making sure we need to upgrade our graphics cards 6 months down the line to keep the money rolling in for them!

Interestingly enough Nvidia claim that since the FX range there cards have supported HDCP, merely that the board partners don't implement it in the BIOS.

Yea that was kinda what they were saying in that article, although it wasnt something that is implemented in the bios - “The boards themselves must be designed with an extra chip when the board is manufactured. The extra chip stores a crypto key, and you cannot retrofit an existing board after the board is produced.”

So I have to buy two new monitors to support Vista fully? LOL

Well Microsoft can **** off if thats the case. Another reason why Apple will still be better with 10.5

I have a 6 year old G3 here, runs 10.4 like a dream.

It isnt ATI/Nvidia's fault that there board producers didnt include this, so why blame them? The support for it has been in there products for some time, just because the people who made the boards didnt include that support doesnt mean its ATI/Nvidia's fault, go and blame BFG/Powercolour or somebody else.

It isnt Microsoft's fault either, im pretty sure they have better things to do, than encrypt HIDEF movies so that people with older hardware cant play them. Thats really a great selling point isnt it.

Also if you think your apple computer is going to be any different then unfortunately your very wrong. The HDCP parts must be in place all through the display system, otherwise you get a downconverted picture, this is independent of the OS your using. no HDCP, no high quality HIDEF BlueRay/DVD movies will play (well almost none, the content provider can specify if its downconverted)

If you want to blame anybody, blame hollywood and the movie companies, its there fault :p

according to the article ATI ARE a board manufacturer so they have no excuse?
But yes in the Nvidia case they are just a GPU manufacturer but just because they allow board manufacturers to be able to add the chip for HDPC how do you know that they don't help them make the decision not to include it if u know what i mean :)
