Interesting FPS 'issue' with GTX 970.

Hey guys,

Ive got a GTX 970 and ive had a few hiccups, mostly with drivers and a newish issue I bumped into where my afterburner LCD monitor was showing the FPS as super high in a certain game (Primal Instinct: Extinction). The fps was in the thousands and I figured it was a bug on the software but about 30 mins of gaming resulted in a PC freeze with my monitor saying that there was no display signal.

I was just playing Far Cry 4 and I needed the loo and so I went on to the menu, from there the FPS jumped right up to the thousands again and after a little while I noticed that the temp of the card went from its normal heat range of 50s to the 70s. This is where I alt+tabbed to cool the card down but the temp was showing no signs of lowering and was in fact quite steadily getting hotter.

I can only assume that the previous 'crash' was the GPU turning off due to overheating. This would seem that for whatever reason the GPU is overworking and the fans simply don't do the job or whatever. Im not an expert but obviously theres something not quite right there.

Anyone else with a 970 had this?

Are the fans spinning faster as the temp increases?

If you don't want your FPS going into the thousands use rivatuner (included with MSI afterburner) to limit it to just about your monitor's refresh rate.

Not entirely sure what RPM the fans were on (I dont have that displaying due to not wanting to clog up the LCD!) but I would presume they were running under max, otherwise im confused as to why the temp was rising quite quickly.

I'm surprised your GTX 970 only reaches the 50's. My Galax 970 operates at about 65 degrees under normal operation.

It did go over 72 once I accidentally enabled custom fan control under MSI Afterburner which lowered the fan speeds to below 70% where it normally was 80% .
Temps on a GTX 970 can run upto 80C on some cheaper models such as the Zotac and Inno3D so 70-75C will not damage the gpu. The max temp is 90C before it can get into danger territory.

It depends on what game im playing on but I live in a cold house so I do believe that helps.

Ive seen the temps run up to 62 odd when gaming on top end games. Since restricting the FPS its been golden :)

That said I just had a crash on CoH2 whereby the screen went black, then displayed the 'no display signal' followed by sound loop and complete crash, keyboard not responding etc.

Im not sure if this is graphics card related but I didn't get it before when I had 2 GTX 580's running. I would presume my PSU is ok due to it running 2 580's for 3 years which require quite a bit more power singularly let alone 2 of them.

That said I also noticed when I was playing Age of Empires 3 the other day that when there was a lot going on instead of hearing coil whine I was getting a clicking type sound that sounded like it was from the PSU. In the past ive had coil whine (with the 580's installed) but since ive had the Galax 970 its been 'resolved'... or so I thought!

Ive bench marked it (how long do I need to do that for?) and it all seems to run smoothly and happily. Worth noting I used MSI Kombuster. Ive noticed that even though my Power % is set to a max of 100 it DOES get up to 105 ish at times. Is that a problem?

After encountering 2 black screen crashes I decided to look elsewhere for fixes and if anyone else was getting this problem. Turned out there was a guy on EVGA forums (different model I know) who had the exact same problem and said with him it happened every 5-15 mins of playing Skyrim. I decided to see if I could replicate this so I launched Skyrim and after 10 mins I crashed.

He has seemingly 'fixed' his problem by getting an RMA and as such I have submitted a request for myself to also get this. Hopefully that will solve my issues!
