Phones can't get much bigger and therefore they're looking at ways to increase the visible screen size. I think phone size and screen resolution has peaked really. Now perhaps Sony, Samsung and Apple and everyone else can start working on battery tech rather than stuff we don't really need. It's funny that "bezel less" is such a thing now... Another pointless target smartphone manufacturers are chasing which the user doesn't really need or want.
Smaller bezels are fine. Samsung have got that nailed pretty well (but then ruin it with pointless curved screens) but adding notches to phones for the sake of trying to be trendy? Ugh
I don't get this fascination with curved edges or bevels on the screen and bits sticking out into it - don't mind if there are versions of phones with it but don't like it as a trend.
It's because people like showing off. Some, not all, owners of notched phones simply see it as a way of expressing that they own the latest and most expensive tech.
iPhone didn't use a notch because it serves some technological purpose, they did it so people can easily identify/show off that they have the latest iPhone.
It's because all phones look pretty much EXACTLY the same and they need to keep on selling disposable phones. The first charade was rounded corner displays, then the "edge" displays, now it's the notch, next year it will be another small but easily noticeable change just so they can keep on milking earth resources as much as possible and sell as many disposable phones as possible. Even Steve jobs himself established the first iPhone as a mechanism for potential sexual gratification.
