Intermittent high ping

Hi,

I recently did a fresh install of Win 7 on my PC and since then have noticed intermittently that websites load slowly with an initial delay. Running a speed test when the problem is apparent results in high pings in the 1000ms region.

I updated my 7800N's firmware and restarted with factory settings and this hasn't resolved it. I also tried my old Draytek 2800G and again I suffer the same intermittent problem so don't think the problem is the router.

However I experience the problem on my laptop too and my phone. My PC is wired to the router and so is the laptop.

If it's not the router then it must be my PC as suggested by the Zen support agent I spoke to. I will try using the laptop with the PC shut down to see if this is the case but is there anything else you guys can suggest?

The only difference between my PC before and after the fresh install is that my PC before the fresh install was long overdue a load of Windows Updates so I suspect one of those updates has caused the problem as my PC is now all up to date.

The Zen support agent carried out diagnostics on his end and reported everything to be fine and I pinged the zen website on my end and statistics were normal and I didn't spot any values that stuck out on each ping.

Thanks.

Also the only application I've installed is Steam with Skyrim but it's sat idling and not downloading anything. I've also installed Malwarebytes and the system is clean. I also experience the problem with both Firefox and Chrome.

I'm not sure if the problem I'm experiencing occurred during that run time but I'll be sure to run it again if I experience the delays during browsing.

Do you use zonealarm?
What AV do you have?

What programs are running?

Update the network drivers

Nah I don't use ZoneAlarm or antivirus. No other programs running besides Steam. During the fresh install I did use the latest network drivers from the Gigabyte site. I also uninstalled it and let Windows reinstall the drivers at one point too but that didn't help.

Update tho...Today the connection has been solid so far. Only changes have been 6 further Windows Updates and I also turned Cloud Sync off on Steam. I suspect it's the Cloud Sync that caused it though as I have had prompts regularly each time I load Skyrim stating it's failed to sync with the Cloud. Will continue to monitor but hopefully it stays solid.

Although I am concerned about the d/s SNR margin? Isn't it too low?

Thanks so far guys. :)
