I'm doing a coursework at the moment to build an expert system for a pet store and the coursework asks us to add certainty factors for it.

However, I really don't see any way in which they improve something like this as you cant put certainty factors for individual rules without ruining the user interface/friendliness unless there is something I am missing?

I first set up a table like this which operates without certainty factors:

Kept : Space Required : Time Required : Animal
==========================================
Outdoor : Large : Medium Time : Cat
Indoor : Small : Little Time : Goldfish

Then convert it to rule based system and add the certainty factors to give things like this:

IF Kept = Indoor
AND Space Required = Small
AND Time Required = Little Time
THEN Animal = Gecko
CF 100.

IF Kept = Outdoor
AND Space Required = Large
AND Time Required = Lots of Time
THEN Animal = Pony
CF 100.

But I still have no idea how to work out the certainty factors aside from putting every one at 100 because if the user says yes to all 3 criteria then that is the animal that should be recommended.

Anyway, not sure if anyone will be able to offer any advice as this is no doubt obscure but good to get it off my chest here.
