Internal Bluray drive through HDD enclosure

I've been looking for an external bluray drive for my mac, but it occurred to me that the connections in my external HDD enclosure are the same as what would be an internal drive. Is it possible to hook up an internal drive and use as external?

In theory yes. But the pcb connector or adapter may have a chip which won't allow it.

Also hard drives are smaller for factor than most optical drives which is something else to take into consideration.
