Hi all, I want to rip my DVD, BR and 4k collection to my NAS, and also burn copies of home videos I have digitised onto Blu-ray so I can distribute to family. Can anyone recommend a drive to do this please? I was looking at the Asus BW-16D1HT but that seems to be unavailable now except used via fleabay.

I just seen your post and I’m at work so can’t check my drive. If you check out make mkv support/forum it should list some makes and models good for this.

I use a verbatim slim external bluray drive and it didn’t need an altered firmware etc, it just worked out of the box. Not sure if still the case if buying new now. Also to add that I’m not sure about burning discs, sorry

Have a look at the LG and Pioneer range. Can’t go wrong with either really.

The LG WH16NS60 is really good but hard to come by now. Worth a look on the usual sites.

You're starting this at a bad time a lot of places aren't making them anymore and many have restrictive firmwares. Which you can flash but you need to know which ones work and which ones don't. Look at the forums of your favorite software. Everything got expensive also.

I bought a LG WH16NS40 (4k) and flashed it to another drive I think WH16NS60. If it breaks I doubt I'll be able to replace it. I also bought an old desktop that has a 5.25 bay and room for 3.5 disks. That was hard to find, I use this as a file server and rendering machine.

I think these options are going to disappear and will become too expensive to do. I'm not sure I'll continue to do it.
